What's the point of linking Facebook account to Hotmail?

I was just messing around last night and decided to join my Facebook and Hotmail accounts. I know this worked as the Contacts page in Hotmail now has profile pictures from Facebook. But I thought doing this would also make Facebook stuff work on my WP8 phone, without explicitly setting Facebook as an account on the phone. I removed the Facebook account that was on the phone and all news feed and contact pictures went.

Am I wrong here - does linking the accounts not make FB "just work" on the phone? Because if it doesn't, I'm kinda lost on what the point of linking the accounts is.

No linking doesn't work on the phone, i see synced contacts & facebook chat with emails while browsing on PC that's all.
On the phone i had to add facebook account separately to get all the facebook contacs & link chat with inbox.

To get the full social media/contacts functionality of WP8 you should link as much as you can. I have FB, Twitter and Linkedin all added to the phone and linked to my live account. I also make sure that all of my contacts that have fb, twitter or linkedin are completely linked together in contacts.

I'm calling this a failed experiment. There were a load of birthdays added, that I don't want my phone to shout at me about, in the same birthday calendar as the contacts I do want birthdays shown for.

I've unlinked Facebook and Hotmail and will readd Facebook to the phone as a seperate account.

I have both of my birthday calendars turned off so that doesn't affect me. When you are in a persons (that u are fb friends, twitter, etc) contact are you able to see everything about that person? Latest s/m updates, photo albums, etc??

Linking FB to Hotmail is primarily for FB chat. If you don't link them, you wont be able to FB chat via Messaging Hub.

I do when setting up FB directly on the phone, but not when relying on linking the account with Hotmail.
