What's your "Fit and Finish" like?

So, after a few days and closer inspection of my tablet this is what I see:

1) As has been reported by many, the volume rocker is loose.

2) The screen does not fit uniformly around the device. There are areas that are "popped" up relative to others.

3) in particular, the area just above the volume rocker has a fair amount of give to it. With a little pressure, I can push the screen back into (what I think is) the correct position.

4) The "off colour" area where the camera and power button are located seems to fit poorly. There are noticeable gaps and unevenness relative to the rest of the case.

5) The kickstand does not close perfectly flush to the device. There is a small (2mm roughly) gap at either end.

Bottom line, I'm left feeling like I didn't purchase a premium device.

But, I'm not sure if these are something I should just live with (I don't believe there to be a perfect device...from anyone), or if my concerns are valid and an exchange is in order. I'm leaning towards an exchange.

So, how would you rate the fit and finish of your Surface 2? Any issues?

Mine has none of those problems you describe. If it did id be returning it and checkin g out the next one before I left the store. I was very carefully putting mine thru its paces, both hardware wise and software wise before my return window was up. I have a solid device in all regards. Shoddiness should not be tolerated.

Both of the Surface 2s that I purchased on launch day do not show any of the problems you listed. You really must've gotten a bad one. Where did you purchase it from? If you can still exchange it, I would recommend to do it. It's not likely you will get another one with so many issues.

Same here, no problems. AI have a small spot on the upper right corner of the frame that is chipped but don't know how as it has never been dropped or bumped. The chip doesn't bother me as I know in no time there will be wear marks all around.

Thanks, guys.

These things aren't very noticeable, only on close inspection, but they're there.

I'm going to factory reset in a few minutes and exchange tomorrow if they still have stock...

My volume rocker became loose, it never rattled when shaking the device now it does, plus on close inspection the paint looks chip on upper right corner.

My 15 day window return is over, so what can i do? I rely on this tablet for curricular stuff and need it on a daily bases.

I am on my 4th unit and the first 3 had all one or all of the issues you listed and a few more. There is a major GC issue with these things, a rep from Surface care admitted there was a problem.

Getting mine exchange through microsoft, they are sending a microsoft certified replacement surface 2. Any experiences with that?

Well, I took it back today and got a refund as they didn't have anymore stock. Another retailer had some, though, so I got another one there.

Looking at this one, the screen seems to fit better (no raised areas). However, I'm unsure if the glass is meant to be flush with the mag casing or ever so slightly raised above it (as this is...evenly all the way around). There's still some "give" to it, though.

There's still a slight gap between kickstand and case, but nothing major.

Volume rocker is still loose, but maybe not quite as bad as my first one.

The "off colour" area where the power button and camera are located has a better fit, but still not perfectly aligned.

Anyway, I think I'm just going to try to live with this one as it's not bad. I went through this with my first gen Nexus 7 and finally gave up on the "perfect" unit...and it's still going strong. I have two weeks to see how much these little imperfections bother me. If they prove too much, I'll get a refund and wait a 2-3 months before the next attempt. If I keep it, I have the warranty if anything goes really wrong.

So, I'm just getting everything all set up again...updates and such...then I'll start making sure there's no weird hardware/software glitches....

Maybe Microsoft switched manufacturing plants, or maybe this is just a bad batch, either way quality control definitely is below the Surface RT. My first S2 had a dented edge. My second has a seam that is slightly ajar near the power button. Luckily it's not really noticeable unless I'm looking very hard for it. I also have the loose volume rocker. Everything else is software related, like the speakers. I assume a firmware update will fix the speakers, the rest I'm not too worried about. The loose volume rocker is annoying but there's no point in doing another exchange until I know the hardware defects are taken care of.
