When did the lock screen password get longer?

I have just found out that I am no longer limited to 4 digit for my lock screen password. Since I installed the 8.1 update developer preview, I am wondering if that was the case with plain 8.1.

Am I the first to notice that?

Is there a maximum password length? I would have loved to be allowed a real password...
