All I can say is that the iPhone is a big seller and it brings AT&T a lot of revenue, so this doesn't surprise me. I don't like it and wish Windows Phone was pushed more, but right now it is what it is.

Dont seem to be having this problem in Europe. Big seller notwithstanding, you should be able to choose whatever phone you want to upgrade to, not just an iphone.

Then it makes sense why Nokia pushed their WP7s in Europe first :)

Exactly, and I'm happy they did. The US anti-WP7/Microsoft bias would have fought tooth and nail against any kind of positive WP7 promotion from Nokia and would have killed any sign of the platform taking off. Personally, I wouldnt care if they didnt release anything on US carriers at all because they would face the same bias and the low sales would just be picked on by sites like engadget to point fingers and say how crap Nokia and WP7 are. If Nokia can make WP7 the dominant smartphone in Europe and elsewhere around the world I say give the US the finger and let them keep on sucking on apple and google's nuts.

Actually, it would be unfair to blame AT&T for pro-iPhone bias. The iPhone brings in about as much revenue as any other smartphone with the equivalent software. The only difference is that the iPhone sells far better than any other smartphone.

But what Apple has been doing for a while now is selling contracts to the mobility companies for the privilege of selling the iPhone. Basically, Apple makes a deal with the cell phone companies so they are allowed to sell the iPhone if they agree to buy a certain amount of iPhones from Apple over a certain amount of years. Sprint is finally allowed to sell the iPhone and the only reason that they are allowed to do that is because they agreed to buy $20 billion of iPhones over 4 years.

So guess what if they can't sell them all in that time? They go bust. Not surprised they might try to fill up the Apple mandate ahead of time, because the companies are placing a huge gamble on Apple continuing to succeed.

If Apple somehow begins to falter, they will be stuck buying iPhones that fewer and fewer consumers want. In Sprint's case, they will actually be losing money on their iPhones until 2014 when the contracts begin to pay off and the big money starts to roll in.

Here is a good article about it:

When I go online, and go through the upgrade process, I can choose anything.
