Why do my received e mails disappear after I have scrolled thru them, but not read them?

I have a Nokia phone with Windows 8.1

You do not give much information so i only can guess.
If you open your stock email app and swipe to "unread" then you only see emails which are not read yet. As soon as you open them the are "marked read" and the next time you will not see them anymore in the "unread" but you will see them in "all".
