Why do old Email Addresses Not Delete ?

I have many invalid, old, and mis-spelled email addresses that I can not delete. When I go to compose a mail, all these addresses (either from being a contacts old address or something that was mis-spelled when I created the contact) appear in the "to" list. There is an option to copy, or remove, which only removes the address from the current mail, but can not be deleted from the 'to list'.
How can I get rid of them ?

If the contacts are on your phone then you can probably correct them and that should fix the issue. If the contacts are on Gmail then you'll have to correct them in Gmail and then the changes should flow through to your phone

I have corrected them on my phone in edit contacts, but still shows up wrong when I compose a new mail. The contacts are correct in Gmail also, and have re-synched all devices. Shows up correct on my tablet and laptop, still wrong only on phone.
