I think many people just want to have the device with the latest and greatest specs, more for bragging rights than anything else.

"Keeping up with the Joneses" is nothing new in US culture, and is not limited to smartphones.

My last cell phone was Nokia 6030, had it for over 5 years. The damn thing for indestructible, I had to get rid of it when the battery die. But I was planning to replace it with a smart phone anyway. Saw too many people with smartphones and started to get the envy.
