Why does the calendar not send meeting attendees their invitation?

When I add an event to my calendar, I often want to invite my husband to the same event. I add him via the Meeting Attendees option but he never receives an email. I tried sending an invitation to myself and that didn't come through to my email inbox either. I have a Nokia Lumia 930 with 8.1 and Denim updates on it.

Which Email & Calendar provider are you using Outlook.com/Gmail?
Just checking that the phone has an email account working on the phone.
