Why doesn't my newly acquired Lumia 521 turn on even after being charged for 5 hours?

I received my Nokia Lumia 521 today and after charging it for a couple of hours I decided to power it up, the word Nokia comes up on the screen and then only getting the blinking connect your charger sign. The screen is totally blank. Can anyone help me please?

If you connect a phone to a charger it already powers up. So if you powered it up it was not charging before. Try again and check the connection or try another original charger or connect it to a PC to charge.
