Why doesn't Windows 10 start after system refresh?

Windows 10 no longer starts after system refresh

I did a system refresh after upgrading to windows 10. After the refresh I installed some apps and restarted my PC however Windows no longer started. I just got a black screen. After force closing a couple times I got a screen with several options. I refreshed my system again, as other options didn't work and for some I lack the knowledge.

The refreshing went fine, but after some updates and restarting I got the same problem. I now refreshed again but don't want to restart or shut down.

I have updates pending now and the 8th of August my PC will automatically restart, and probably I have to refresh again if I don't find a solution.

How can I solve this problem?
I would greatly appreciate some help here.

Check the Windows update history and see if anything has or is being installed after the refresh, could be a bad update, also, check in device manager to see if everything is working properly, any devices w/issue will usually be indicated by a yellow exclamation mark, if not done already you may have to visit your PCs manufacturers site and grab all the driver updates for your specific computer.

Only the driver for the finger print scanner has a yellow exclamation mark. When I look for updates online it says that it is already up to date.

My laptop restarted so I am refreshing again.

Nothing has been installed after the refresh. I am not sure how to check if all my drivers are up to date. Only the driver for the finger print scanner has a yellow exclamation mark. I installed one driver update (BIOS) from the Lenovo website, but then my laptop restarts and I need to refresh.

I updated several drivers now. I shut down my computer and it started just fine. I didn't do a restart yet. I don't know if there would be a difference but I don't feel like trying right away. I need to get some work done and don't want to refresh again and loose time.

Thanks for your help.

Your welcome... Have to ask a question, how did you upgrade, via the "Get Windows 10" app or using an ISO?

The reason I asked is because in my experience, what worked for one PC didn't necessarily work for the other, miffed as to why that is, I'd be inclined to try which ever method you didn't go with unless of course, you've already given both a whirl... Soldier on 😊

I reserved via "Get Windows 10" app but the installation didn't work. I got several failed attempts in my update history the 29th of August. I typed wuauclt.exe /updatenow into the command prompt and then it worked. https://www.reddit.com/r/windows/comments/3eyrre/fix_for_the_80240020_error_when_trying_to_install/

The upgrade then went smooth but several things didn't work as they should:

When I pinned apps to the start menu or task bar they only appeared after I restarted the laptop.
Cortana was a disaster
Office programs started up very slow especially excel
I couldn't access the settings of Windows Defender

There were a few more issues like that.

I then did a refresh of the PC via the settings menu and got into the trouble I posted about here. Still I am glad that I did the refresh because the issues I had after the update are solved.

My best outcome was one PC which I upgrades via ISO, once I was assured it was properly registered and we had grabbed all drivers from manufacturers site, I proceeded to do a "clean" install using the ISO, the OS was successful in registering and for the most part, didn't need much in the way of device driver updates, so far so good under normal use.

As with anything ones mileage will very and there's no guarantee it'll work for all, too many variations in PC's, always amazed me how MS could provide Windows updates and the like and get them to work with so many different devices, do think though W10 was a tad premature in its readiness for prime time.

At the moment my PC and the applications run very well. Outlook 2013 never performed so well as it is now. I still didn't do a restart. I will do that on Thursday, I have too much work right now and therefore don't want to spent time again on a refresh in case it goes wrong.

I didn't want to a clean install using the ISO, seemed too much hassle at the time when I could just do an upgrade.
