Why Don't Microsoft just tell the truth?

Given the recent announcements from the CEO, If he never believed there was a reason to be in mobile, then why push out a device, why was he not truthful and state this on day 1? Over the years, he has single handedly caused more people to run away and become Microsoft Haters than Steve Ballmer did over his entire career (at least for mobile).

Back in 2015 when they announced the end date for WM, everyone was like, "No you don't understand Windows is going to be on every device. You'll have it on your watch, your phone, your tv, your xbox, your pc, your car, and even your fridge." I left and tried to help convince others to leave too. I remember being so happy with Windows 7 and Zune. It kept me with them so much longer than I should have stayed.

Usually the support dates relate to a specific range of builds, not the whole OS.

I mean, do you really think that the upcoming update will not be supported even less than half a year later???

I look at a mobile platform as having three main components, the device itself, the OS, and apps.

If Microsoft is dumping on their own apps (been doing that for a while), isn't that already a sign they are not supporting the platform as a WHOLE?

The support lifecycle for Windows (see here) extends with every new version number (Threshold, Creators Update, Fall Creators Update, etc).
W10M got a version number bump with the latest Insider build so it's support will not end before 2019

Thank you @milkyway for providing documented evidence that the world doesn't end January of 2018. Version 1703 for Mobile was released in April of 2017 so we have close to 2 years to live. I need to revise my bucket list because I might not have enough time for that trip to Mars.

Microsoft never lied, or skirted the truth. They just changed course as the market shifted, as leadership changed, and as market strategy changed. At worst, they were guilty of poor corporate communication. To anyone that has been following this at all, everyone has said that Microsoft was leaving the mobile space behind.

Here, I saved you a few mouse clicks. June of 2019 is the EOS for 1703 so we've been given a brief stay of execution. Read the notes on the right margin and you'll note that WaaS rules govern the lifecycles including any subsequent updates.

I dont understand the concept of 'leaving the mobile space'. If they are working on streamlining the whole Windows OS with this new Core OS that works on all devices from largest to smallest wouldnt they, in effect, be still in the mobile space? In the same way that you can have an iphone with a groove app or outlook app, why is it not possible to have a phone that is basically a windows OS but with itunes music, google maps, etc etc.? If they have already admitted defeat what is the point of this core OS?
