How long were the calls that you were making?
A lot of parts of the phone are working together during a call, some of which are near the earpiece. Such parts include the ear speaker (of course), the antenna (at the upper right portion of the phone when viewed from the back) and the proximity sensor (to the right of the earpiece). The location of these parts (especially the antenna) are most probably the cause for the perceived heat near the earpiece.
