Experience the same with my surface book 2015, checked task manager and showed disk manager and cpu % way too high.
Wouldn’t let me do anything for too long as it’s shorts down after a minute or two, updates were out of the question.
After painfully resetting device and that didn’t resolve it, stopped all back ground apps temp disabled my dedicated graphics card and successfully updated to latest window with a pack of frozen peeps to cool device down, now works like a charm. Hopefully you get yours resolved and if possible back up to OneDrive and review task manager for what’s app making the system cpu/gpu or disk manager spike up
