Why is the difference between the Lumia Denim and WP 8.1?

Can someone explain to me the difference between Lumia Denim and wp 8.1? My 830 has wp 8.1, but I saw in one of the articles that there was an 8.1.1. I also saw on another article that there was an update to Lumia Denim, and that the one on the 830 wasn't the "real" Lumia Denim. Does my phone have the latest updates? I'm asking this because of the confusion surrounding the Lumia Camera update. It says it isn't available in the (Canadian) App Store, and that it needed wp 8.1.1 and Lumia Denim to operate. Is it not available because my phone hasn't gotten the update yet?

Windows Phone 8.1 is the OS, from Microsoft. Denim is the firmware for the phone (used to be Nokia). They are separate items.

WP 8.1.1 is the Update 1 for WP 8.1 or what's known as General Distribution Release (GDR).

To check to see if you have Denim go to Settings -> Info + Extras

Depending on what Lumia 830 you bought it's possible you may not have 'proper' Denim. There was a pre release model that didn't have Denim on it and I believe they are still waiting for it.

Lumia denim in general sense= WP 8.1.1 update which enable startscreen folders etc....
Now for phones like 930/1520 Denim= Hey cortana enabled, 4k Recording and the ability to get Lumia Camera 5.0 later.
830 gets the same as 930/1520 sans hey cortana and 4k recording so will recieve the lumia camera 5.0 and the new features that come with it.
So that's Denim for u- 8.1.1 os update and firmware update enabling ability to get lumia camera 5.0.
Then there was this small update that came after denim which enabled quick toggle for data connection, update scheduler and live battery tile that's probably still seeding to the non pfd phones.
