Why so many Windows apps doing more or less the same

Maybe I am ignorant or have missed the debate but I cannot understand why so many apps exist doing more or less the same. For instance we now have Skype and Skype preview and Skype for business. Why not just one Skype app where one can login with all user accounts like One drive where I can link all my accounts in one app.

Then we have Power Point, Flow and Sway. Again more or less the same app but one slightly different from the other.

In Office 365 an app has been added, Projects, yet also now evident in Microsoft Teams. Yammer and MTeams and so I can carry on.

Maybe I don't understand how all of this fits into each other but with one app incorporating all similar functions our life can just get easier.

That's on Microsoft. As for the Skypes, the Skype Preview is the important one.

Also different teams are working on these different things, so we don't really get a say there.
