Windows 8.1 killed my Internet Explorer add-ons: Adobe PDF creator incompatible

I just upgraded to Windows 8.1 and, with that, it automatically upgraded IE10 to IE11. I have Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.0 installed on my PC and I greatly make use of the Adobe PDF creator toolbar, to convert web pages into .pdf files. When I booted up IE11 for the first time, though, I received the following error message: "Several add-ons aren?t compatible with Internet Explorer?s enhanced security features and have been disabled." If I go to manage add-ons, the Adobe PDF creator suite are listed there as "incompatible" and they cannot be enabled. I tried rolling back to IE10 but IE10 is incompatible with Windows 8.1. What can I do? I tried going to Print > Adobe PDF in IE instead, but that doesn't seem to work. I really don't want to download a different Internet browser.

Given you are two full upgrade cycles out of date, Adobe hasn't updated the software since 6/14/2011; it isn't officially supported on Windows 8 (technically it wasn't even fully supported for Windows 7 according to its spec sheet); I really would not hold my breath on an update. Acrobat XI and its toolbar are supported.

Ah, okay, so if I buy the latest version of Acrobat Pro, the add-ons will work just fine? Microsoft is still updating products launched more than a decade ago (Windows XP) and Adobe already stopped updating products only a few years old? That's weak, Adobe. Weak.

On another note, though, I don't like how IE 10 is incompatible with Windows 8.1. I'm all for the updated IE 11, but don't make the not-eve-a-year-old IE 10 incompatible, Microsoft, for many users many encounter compatibility issues like this when upgrading and may have as an only option switching to a non-Microsoft browser. Silly move.

Yes just had the free update from Windows 8 to windows 8.1 also ie11 was install now it shows that Adobe pdf is incompatible. also Sites developed with Adobe Edge Animate loads a Blank Page. it does not play Flash even though the Plugin is enabled, and there is no flash player to download. all in all a complete waste of time. Microsoft should put a warning out that updating to Windows 8.1 causes these problems. What is Microsoft playing at. I now use Chrome

Geez, could someone please mention whether these comments refer to RT or Pro or both? (fyi, they are different.)

I wrote "Windows 8.1" in my original post. If I had meant Windows RT 8.1 (as it's apparently called), I would've written that instead. As a further clue, we are also talking about the software program Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.0. That's not a program that is available for Windows RT.

That said, I have both a Windows 8.1 Pro laptop and a Surface RT, and I love them both (but I really wish my Surface RT was a Surface 2! I just played with one today in the store and it was so nice).

So, this CutePDF has an Internet Explorer Add-on that allows me to click a button and have it convert the web page into a pdf file like Acrobat Pro?

Not really. It creates a virtual printer that converts to .pdf. You can create a .pdf from any application. All you need to do is print. Make sure you get the free version. Its fully functional. Not really sure what the paid version has to offer. I'll have to check that out.

I see. Damn, that IE add-on for Acrobat Pro is really convenient. It sucks that Adobe sucks at supporting their software. I have Acrobat Pro on my PC now and I can boot it up and convert URLs to pdfs there, so I'll probably just do that for now, but I'll look into CutePDF as well.

Have you tried disabling Enhanced Protected Mode in IE11's advanced settings?

It worked! Thanks. I had come across this in a different thread (on Adobe's support page) but another user said he tried it and it didn't work so I didn't even bother to try, until I re-read it here in your comment. Problem solved!
