Windows Backup: "the specified object was not found (0x80042308)"

when I select the option to "let Windows manage the space used for backup history" I get the error found in the title of this thread. the error does NOT occur when I switch the option back to "keep only the latest system image.." as far as I can remember, I have always encountered this error on the system in question. even after doing a clean install when v1903 was released, the error has persisted.

SFC does not find any integrity violations. 'DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth' has also not resolved anything. I don't know what else to try.. thoughts, suggestions?

Can we have more information please? Is there a specific error code? What device are you using that displays the error?

My fault for not reading the thread title properly. I apologise.

To cut a long story short, you can either try a different backup program or the advice below from the page above, but there is no permanent fix:

Windows Back Up only likes a 512K per sector on the PHYSICAL partition. The newer drives are 4K per sector w/ most having a 4KEmulation setup to be compatible with the Windows Back Up utility. Formating the drive in windows can corrupt the 4KE setup. Download Discwizard (Or the WD equivalent). Run it. Click Disc Utilities>Next>Select the Drive and click next>Select Delete the Partitions on the Destination Hard Disk and click Next>Make sure Create New Partition in Unallocated Space is checked and click next>Next>Select NTFS and click Next>Select PRIMARY partition and click next>Label the Partition whatever and next your way to Finish.

It WILL take a few times for VSS to be happy with drive so you might have to run the back up a few times to get it going if it kicks back at you.
