Windows Mango headset issue?

I was an iphone user moved to samsung focus s yesterday...
I am seeing a strange behaviour when connect headset (no mic) to phone, people are not able to hear anything I say though I am able to hear them through headset fine...

Is it due to mic not available when you connect headset?

the other headset i have with mic is working fine and with bluetooth its working fine too...


wondering if mic get disabled when you connect an headset?

How is it behaving for you?

How many black lines are on the connecter of the headset that does not allow mic to work?

If you are sticking a headset in the 3.5mm jack that only has 2 black rings on it, which is just a standard headset. Then effectively you are shorting out the mic on the phone. If you have used 1 with 3 black rings then there is no short in the circuit. You need to make sure it is the correct type or you will suffer that problem again.

With Iphone 3GS it works fine in a way I am using headset to listen to music at very low volume (2-3 bar) and when a call comes I am using headset to hear and phone mice to talk that way phone mic which has best noice isolation provide best listening experience,

now with new phone/os Its not working that way which means I have to unplug the headset (monster one) then only others are able to hear me

If I use Etymotic MC2 one then other side is experiencing noice (talking while in train) due to headset mic and they are alos not able to hear as my headset volume level is too low, set for listning

Wondering does volume level butten affect headset and mic volume level both or just headset colume?

Ideal way for me is to use headset to listen music while commuting and talk as needed, while talking using microphone of phone to eliminate as much noice as possible...

Can someone confirm?

That's strange. I'm able to use my car stereo, and my headphones (ATH-M50) - both of which do not have a mic), to converse with people.

The in-call volume is different from the "main" system volume. It's the only seperate volume control. In addition, the in-call volume can only be controlled from inside of a call.

Phones: Focus, and now Focus S. Works the same for my HTC Aria, Moto Atrix. Sis' iPhone, too.

I tested with my Sennheiser hd600 and still microphone was not working when make a call

Thanks, you are right about call volume separate from phone overall volume, music volume is max 30 levels while call is max 10 levels, and microphone volume is is not affected by lowering the volume, great 2 confusions over

Now turn on speakerphone and others will be able to hear you (side effect of this is headset is not in use now)

I tested this several times by initiating calls from skype from my computer and its just not working, I am not sure why it works with your headset (just to double check are you taking/making a call with headset attached and other party is able to hear you?)


Also to confirm I have no issue with bluetooth as my LG HBS700 as well as bluetooth devices in car are working just fine with it.

Off topic, but, Holy crap, you have $500 headphones? And $150 headphones? Wow...

Most of us don't but I really hate the idea that an OEM would make the assumption that I'll use nothing but cheap ear buds and thus won't notice inferior sound quality.

I know they can hear me. I mentioned the car stereo - in CA, we are not allowed to put the phone up to our face while driving - I make phone calls that way. Speaker phone gets drowned out by freeway noise, and so does my BT Speaker. So overall, I MUST use the car stereo (connected to 3.5mm jack) to recieve calls, otherwise, I'm not able to hear anyone. Have done this for a while with my Mango'd Focus (I got my Focus from CL to replace my broken Zune after Mango came out; liked it; ended up replacing my phone, too ), and once with my new Focus S (work provided phone ).

So yes, the other side does hear me.

Zune HD tops out around ~680kbps, iirc. I remember discussing this on the ZuneBoards.

and that process works on my phone as well with car stereo basically what you are using is having equalant functionality of headphone with microphone thus it will work just fine

How about the headphone you mentioned(i assume headphone have no microphone) can you try below and confirm...

Connect a wired headphone (without microphone functionality) and place a call and see other person can hear you?

its not about qualy headphone I am talking about very basic issue: let me reapeat it again....

Take any wired headphone without microphone functionality
Connect to phone
Place a call and see if other party can hear you

Please confirm the headset model if that works for you?


If not please update so that i know its not samsung focus S issue?

Have 3 BT headsets as well, benifits of being single... finally its etymotic headset which gave me best isolation without any headacheafter listening long hours music at very very low volume, also take the call same time if needed and use phone microphone , which means with lowest volume you can stay on for hours and dont feel fatigue and voice is so clear....

So, I am not sure what your problem is exactly, but that should not be happening. I do not have the Focus S, but, it still should work.
I am going to assume you have reset the phone (turned off and on) once to see if it is just something wacky that gets reset?

Let me see if I'm understanding you correctly. When you use your headphones that have microphone functionality, your callers can hear you. When you use your headphones that don't have a microphone, they can't hear you.

Also, on your iphone you could listen through headphones and talk through the phone's mic, and take advantage of its noise cancellation. On your Focus S, when you use your headphones with microphone functionality, your voice is not as clear as it was on your iphone. This leads you to believe that your voice is not going through the phone's built-in mic. Did I get all the parts of your question right?

If I had to guess, I'd say that the Focus S is designed so that plugging in the headphones disables the phone mic. The fact that turning on the speakerphone disables the headphones might help confirm this.

If I'm wrong, here's hoping I've at least got the question summarized correctly, so people with more knowledge than I have can help!

Thanks for summarizing though I can see thread is going in wrong direction and trying to tackle other things which I already got answer above...(Please...lets not worry about rest of the various scenerios for now)

Here is the simple question left: are you seeing this behaviour?

1. Take any wired headphone without microphone functionality
2. Connect to phone
3. Place a call and see if other party can hear you

Please try and confirm below: if other party can hear your voice....

What is your phone model?
Whats is headset model?
assuming OS is mango, if not specify which version....

seems nobody tried, any just to close this thread here is what the final outcome....
I posted on another forum and one member confirmed he tried the steps and it worked for him, there you go this is all I needed....


Thus i went to At&T store today and verified with other phones on display, this is the issue with Focus S only, Titan and Focus is working as expected. AT&T folkes were surprised too

Will return this phone and get Titan, somehow battery life was really bad on Focus S, hardly 8-10 hours with normal usage, almost same usage i get from 3GS which has 2 yaers old battery...

But I love windows phone OS thus no looking back
