Why do I have to calibrate my compass everytime?? It has been like this since I bought the phone, 6 months ago. It has been through numerous updates like amber, black now 8.1 and nothing fixed it. However, I saw the issue on friend's 1320 too. Why it happens everytime, a bug or what?

Everytime? Are you sure you don't have magnetized keys in your pocket or on your desk by your phone?

It's just that the sheer amount of E.M. waves your phone's compass comes in contact with everyday screw its brains inside out. :D

Weirdly, even after the calibration steps, my 1020 compass always gives me a different reading than my 920's compass, which also gives me a different reading from my Surface Pro 2.

The 920 is accurate, the 1020 says north is about 15 degrees too far clockwise, and the Surface is just way off.

Same issue here: not moving at home my L1020 compass is at the minimum 7.0 degrees off clockwise. In a car or cab, I almost always have to calibrate the compass FIRST before being able to use it, and since I don't have enough room to wave my phone in a figure-8 in the air in the car, I just twist my wrist while holding it in my hands effectively rotating the phone along all three axes and it usually gets re-calibrated.

I did NOTICE, though, that at times while WATCHING the map in a moving car (I'm not the one driving), the compass would suddenly be very accurate, with 0-1 degree(s) heading accuracy. Was able to recreate this accuracy while holding my phone in my hands and walking around my room. I'm guessing all three sensors (magneto, gyro, accelero) work in tandem for a more accurate calibration?
