"Your phone is having troubles"

I tried to connect my Lumia 920 to my Windows 8 desktop computer with the USB cable. It opened the Windows phone app but then displayed an error message "your phone is having troubles" and a recommendation I restart my phone. I restarted the phone and got the same message. I check for updates on both my phone and my PC, restarted both and got the same response. I tried connecting my 920 to my Surface tablet and got the same response and error message. I noticed my phone screen doesn't change when it is connected with the USB cable and still displays live tiles. I am not sure what else to try. Any suggestions or anyone experience a similar problem?

IME nothing about the phone will change when you plug it in other than the charging indicator will go on. The phone is still usable while transferring data back and forth. That said, that's an interesting error. Try a different cable? Different port?

I did try two different ports on my desktop and I also tried two different USB cables. I looked on the desktop and under computer it lists the phone but says the device as stopped responding when I try to access it. The error message says "Your Windows Phone isn't playing nicely with your PC. Restarting your phone should persuade it to work better." I guess the people at Microsoft are trying to add some personality to their error messages.

Check the phone connecting setting, maybe you disabled the driver mode.

Where do I find the phone connecting setting?

I'm extremely frustrated. I have tried connecting the 920 to a Windows 8 PC, a Windows 7 PC and the Surface and get the same error message and inability to connect to the phone. I have uninstalled the device on the PC, uninstalled and reinstalled the Windows Phone app, tried different cables, turned the phone on and off. The issue appears to be with the phone, not the computer. The only success I have had is resetting the phone. However when I add apps it stops connecting. I think one of the apps I am downloading is messing something up but I don't know which one. I have spent hours trying to figure this out. I am beginning to consider returning the 920 and getting another brand of phone.

Go to the control panel and try disabling the Windows Firewall. If your phone connects you can then re-enable the firewall.

Your phone is having troubles...

That sounds like an error message the Carl's Jr. vending machine gave in Idiocracy to the lady trying to get her fries.

I have been talking to the windows phone support about this issue and what worked for me was turning off the cloud sharing service, on the xbox music app, reset my phone then connect. Bam, worked. The support said I will have to disable that option if I would like to connect for now. It seems like they might be aware of this issue with some phone.

YOU are the MAN! (or woman)

I had tried setting firewalls, virus protection, reinstalling apps, resetting the phone multiple times. I called AT&T and they couldn't fix it. AT&T conference called me with Nokia and they couldn't fix it. Nokia said they were going to have to have a more advanced technical support specialist contact me in 48 hours. AT&T recommended I swap the phone for a new one. I got a new phone and it didn't solve the problem. But your solution worked! Thank you!

OMG!

I've had my Lumia 920 for almost 2 weeks, the first week was spent trying to get it connected to my PC, always had that "Your phone is having troubles" error. Tried everything, 3 different PCs, different usb cables. Even had my Lumia swapped for a new one. Still could net get it to connect. That is until today, when I went into Xbox Music and turned off cloud sharing, turned my phone on and off and straight away it connected to my PC. You are my hero.

This is interesting because my wife and daughter have the HTC Inspire Android phones that I cannot get to connect with any of the 10 PC's (running Win7, Win8, Windows Server 2008R2 and WinXP) that I've tried it with. They wouldn't connect to my Mazda's bluetooth either. My L920 connects to every PC immediately and connect to my car's bluetooth without any issues. Good luck in your troubleshooting!

Sorry for necroposting
But that might help someone!

All I had to do to get rid of that nasty error was taking out my microSD card!
That should work for people who has all the correct drivers and tryed everything.

UPD
Yes. And formatting the SD (with my phone) fixed the connection problem for good
