Kind of pointless thread maybe, but I just wanted to play a little game here.
Try to predict the names of the next Lumias!

My guess:

- 6" Phablet: Lumia 1130;
- Updates the the current Nokia line: Lumias 1030, 930, 830, 730, 630, 530;
- RT8.1 Tablet: Have no idea :p

I like the idea of calling the budget versions Lumino ;)

I am hoping for a 930 though.... I would like to think that Nokia aren't stupid enough to release upgrades that have less than the original as in the 925 and 1020....

No mess at all!
- From lower end to high end: 5xx, 6xx, 7xx, 8xx, 9xx, 10xx.
- Generation: x2x, (probably) x3x, x4x, x5x, etc...
- Main model variations: xx1, xx2, xx3, xx4, xx5, xx6, xx7, xx8, xx9.

Would be easier if it was Lumia, Lumia 2, Lumia 3, Lumia 4, etc... But when you have so many models available to a lot of market segments, model variations and carrier variations, the solution found by Nokia is actually quite smart.

Also, it is easy to buy a Lumia even if you don't know everything about all models:
- Hello, I want a Nokia Lumia.
- How much are you willing to spend?
- €300.
- OK, here you have a Lumia 720.
- Nevermind, I don't mind spending €400.
- OK, Lumia 820 for you!
- Thanks!
- Bye!

Easy.

I think I get it now.

I thought that a new generation of hardware (the new Phablet and even a PureView phone that has better hardware than 92x) was going to bring new names, like Lumia 930, 1030 or even 1530. But looks like they will all keep the x20 in the name... even the phablet with quadcore, 1080p!!

So what does this mean?

It means that generations for Nokia are not really about hardware! Software is what defines a generation for Nokia. Lumia 920, 925, 1020 and 1520 are all WP8 devices (preGDR2, GDR2 and GDR3). We are only going to see x30 devices when WP8.1 arrives. That's what is going to define next generation devices for Nokia. And it makes sense! Nokia has always mentioned that WP doesn't need high-end specs to be super fluid and fast. It has always been about software optimization in our ecosystem! So it makes sense that generations are defined by OS versions and not the specs they support.

Lets see if I'm right next year with WP8.1.

I agree. Basing model numbers on the supported OS version would make much more sense. Good idea.

However, you are trying to reverse engineer a model numbering scheme/system that simply doesn't exist. Obviously, Nokia aren't just pulling model numbers out of a hat, but they aren't as systematic about it as we would like.

Phablet: I predict they will abandon the number scheme and will call it the Courier, and those that get the bittersweet irony in that name will get a 10% discount on their purchase.

Damn, I failed the 6" phablet by a long shot!!
