Would it be possible to make a S400, S600, and S800 version of the Lumia 830, like laptops that come in i3, i5, and i7 versions, with everything else remaining the same ? Or with different ram specs ... like a Lumia 830 S4 1 GB ram, Lumia 830 S6 2 GB ram, and Lumia 830 S8 3 GB ram for example ?

Probably but the L830 is a mid range phone and what you get is what you get. Maybe they'll release another flagship with similar specs but better CPU.

Its definitely possible, but it addes an insane amount of complexity that is weird for a phone.

It just seems more cost effective to have three different phones, at three different price points, for three different types of consumer by only changing the processor. I mean ... if they share the same "socket", for lack of a better term, couldn't you just snap a S800 in where a S400 would go ?

It would all depend if they do have the same 'socket'. Now you got me curious if they solder the CPUs to the board or not.

I believe I remember reading on AnandTech that the 410 and 610 were pin-compatible, but not back compatible with the 400 (currently in the 830).

The difference between phone SoCs and desktop CPUs is that there is no standardized pin layout for phone SoCs. The upcoming snapdragon 410 and 61x are pin compatible, so it would be possible to make different versions of a phone with either of them. But otherwise it would mean redesigning the logic board for each option.
