Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
IMO, I did not find 950XL as very ugly in the first renders and i dont find them "out of the world" with latest pics. So effectively my opinion has not changed very much about them. What about you?

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
I want the 950. Seems like an awesome phone for me at least :)

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
Interesting but I guess in India it'll be too expensive...

Uninspiring design, more of the same, and that's not working for msft. That said I want too see the os as that's what I'm here for so I'm eagerly awaiting Oct!

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
i don't like them then i don't like them now they just look like low end devices with high end spec.....they desnt fit to current trend......they don't look premiuim to my eyes so i don't think we have to premiuim/flagship price for this things...

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
Design wise, I want to like it but I can't. The speaker grill cutout still looks cheap, the whole phone looks very boring and uninspiring.
It was a big mistake that they ditched the metal band around the phone, and also the soft corners make it look like a 550.
We still don't know what the back of the smaller 950 looks like, but if the leaks are true about the thick chrome ring around the camera, well then I can safely say I have nothing to look forward to.
-
Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
I agree with you. It does not have the "WOW" factor which 920 had at the time of its launch. To me the front face for both of them looks like any mid-range Xperia phone.
-
Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
Well, 920, 925, 1020, 1520, 730, 830 all were very much better looking.
-
Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
Not at all. But. The XL I would lean to but as with all WP that I have wanted it will be as always EXCLUSIVE. Which means this time around I will not buy a device I really didn't want just to use the OS.
-
Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
It did mine as the camera module looks smaller. Me im all in regardless of what it looks like, a flagship is a flagship because of its specs, if you want a iphone clone china has plenty of them.
-
Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
On screen keys is a deal breaker for me..
ill pass and stick to my 1520.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
Nope, still find them bland and uninspired.

I totally agree with the Speaker Grill design, it ruins the overall design because of that. If they at least use same speaker design as 640 XL, 820, or 930 it would be much better.
My stance didn't change, I still find them quite bland, uninspiring and kind of boring. Though at least they're not that ugly but its totally disappointment that it didn't bring any wow as compared to (most) Lumia from the past, especially for flagship this is rather bad in a way. Flagship should attract us to look at it and wanting to own it without even knowing the specs, features and OS of it. These flagship doesn't give that feeling.
Sure there are people who do like it and good for them but unfortunately the faction has been made and that's the bad part in general. Instead of uniting us these flagship became a catalyst for making us Microsoft community formed distinct groups.
The problem with these 950 and 950 XL is no really the individual elements but how it all comes together and it wasn't harmoniously comes together, it looks more like to me trying to combine distinctly aesthetic elements in a single thing with a duct tape. Material or even on-screen button isn't an issue. A lot of phones especially previous Lumia are full polycarbonate but they're stunning, a lot of Android phones now have on-screen buttons but still stunning, a lot of phones that doesn't have thinner bezels but still looks flagship (HTC One series for example), and these upcoming Lumia are anti-thesis of those. Funny thing for other people there is a high chance they might mistakenly think 550 and 950 are similar at a glance, even in looking at it without looking its back. Only screen size will make a difference really.
What I'm even most bothered is the lack of color options which is very synonymous to Lumia. Now they come with black and white which will blend with smartphones out there already.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
Not at all, I still love them. The feeling of holding a 640 XL with a matte white shell can't be matched. Now that there's a more premium phone on my hands, with as much storage as an HP Stream, my Asphalt 8 gaming and overall bragging rights will be much better than on my 635.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
I'm happy with them. Enough said.
-
Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
If you count the amount of real-estate around the screen as part of the design, then I am very displeased. If you don't count that, then I like the design very much.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
I have nothing again the 950... And will get one or the XL day one... Before my 1520 broke, I was a little hesitant due to what more could I want? Even the 640 I am using now, I am very happy with.
I just don't get all the complaining... You all want a windows phone... Yet you want it to be a a galaxy or an iPhone rather than it being unique as it is. There is nothing cheap about this phone... This phone is designed with function in mind rather than marketing what premium is...
I was in apple yesterday picking up an iPhone 6s with my girlfriend... My nephew has the galaxy 6 edge... These phones feel awesome and light... Yet people cannot wait to put some ugly case on them... **** design when you will **** it up with a case....
Windows with poly body is customizable, replaceable, durable, and allows for uniqueness. Storage minimum is 32 which is standard. Real expandable storage that you can use for more than media, apps... Who else does this? This phone has a dedicated camera button, again who else does this? I dont need curved glass... I need my phone to be usable in its default state.
It makes me laugh at people complaining about things and wanting things... I mean most of the complainers will either get the phone still... Or will go to another platform... Great, why limit yourself.?! I equate the whole premium thing to buying a bike... Almost everyone dreams about a full carbon fiber bike, yet a steel or aluminum fram might be better... It all depends on the application... Most people do not know what they want... All they know is they don't want to look cheap or like they cannot keep up with the Jones. Bike stores know this and play on this... Most do not mind selling you more than you need cause it will do the basic riding that you want and it feels really good.. But you want use it or appreciate it anyhow... But you will show it off and be happy that you have it... Cool...
It's ok, you look at my bike... Scoff and pass by me with your nose in the air.. But I will be that guy cranking by you again just to do ans show that me in my cargo shorts rather than aero gear just smoked you up that hill cause its about skill... Same with phone or computer... I dont care how it looks ans feels, I care how it works. It is a tool for me.
Super long post... Just buy what you want...you dont want this phone, dont buy it... But most people hear just want onw to go to another camp to say, look at me... If you want to compete with them so bad, go t get the phone they have... Otherwise own and embrace windows... It is rruely the unique pone and the company who is truly thinking different.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
No, they look boring. I still in love with my 930.
-
Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
They definitely look better than the initial renders. The phone at an angle sort of has that lumia 830/930 mix. I'm still not a fan of that bezel at the bottom. Typically you have something there if you need bezel. Motorola released a 5.7 inch phone with so little bezel it's smaller than iphone 6 plus. Iphone 6 plus at least has a button there. The on bezel buttons would make it look better because it gives the bezel a purpose. Now I would still have to see it in person. The 950Xl is likely the phone I want to buy. But now I'm hearing that MS may actually let carriers take over the update process again. It seems only Apple has the power to do it themselves. So if that's the case I may not stick around with Windows. It will become another android nightmare. It's a huge shame because I do love Windows mobile, but we can't expect everyone to run insider preview apps just to get their updates.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
No, we barely saw any 950 images. It was mostly the 950 XL, and the issues I had (on-screen nav buttons, split volume buttons) are still there. I didn't see a shot of the 950's back to dispute the presence of that hideous metal ring.
What DID change is my interest in these things. The $750+ pricing is a joke on a good day, and Microsoft's marketshare and lack of a major phone release in over a year doesn't make this a good day. If these things launch at $650+ in the U.S. I won't be buying them. They're simply not worth the price tag, but that stupid iris scanner is raising the cost. They're using inferior parts to the iPhone 6S and supposedly going to charge the same price or more. They can't be serious.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
Damn it jaimeastin,
you nailed it (although I kinda lost you when talking about bikes) :P
This devices are the flagships Windows 10 needs, they have the unmistakable Lumia look (and certainly build quality) and specs to keep you happy for at-least 2 years.
Just don't forget that you are in the Windows Phone world, not the iPhone, nor the Android.
While every single manufacturer copy the most recent iPhone looks, Lumia just passes through without even caring about this craze.
Well I'm always speaking from my side and the first thing I hate, is ''borrowing'' someone else's ideas and presenting them as yours *cough* samsung, xiaomi, huawai, etc.. (on the looks department)
Specs on those two devices are top notch BY ANY STANDARDS. I won't say more about them.
They are targeting people that love WP and want the best experience in the WP space, I don't care if Android or iPhone have better specs, it is just not relevant because none of them can run WM!
As long as renders go, they just can't show the reality, nor bring justice to the design!
I was looking at every single photo before buying the 730,renders, countless videos, but just nothing could bring to me a clearer view than HOLDING it in my own hands.. To tell you the truth from renders and photos I couldn't see the beauty, it looked like a rectangle brick...
So,
specs: check (more than enough without any single weak point)
design: ??? (renders can't bring justice, you need to use it to see for you self)

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
I liked the phones; they are not awesome and by awesome I mean like the Nokia N8 which is the most awesome looking phone that will be ever be built or dreamt; another phone I like a lot is the HTC M8.
I have to add that the phone is in line with I would expect and want. More often that I would like, I think that a lot of people get paid to complain.
Now, price is something that might really stop me from buying the phone.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
First it was specs, then apps, now its design that doesn't matter to WP's appeal bit still to the MDDF )Microsoft Delusional Defense Force) its the best OS. Trying to figure out why only WP/10M is the only platform that doesn't need any of the things that makes modern smartphones attractive....
And BTW, I'm pretty sure no one asks for the new phones to look like an iphone but when you're playing to the crowd the safe jibe makes sense.....

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
Yes, I sort of liked the XL initially and now like it more. Any chance that blue makes it to market? Curious that these new leaks do not shed any more light on the 950 and focus on XL. I would rather get the 950 over the XL but I'm shallow and it looks better, so bigger pockets it is.... Please please please launch the blue...

Thank you.
These phones are bland and REGULAR people aren't going to buy them. PERIOD. But what is that you say? These phones aren't for regular folk, they're for WP enthusiasts? Well it seems that most of us are disappointed with the design; 50-50 split AT BEST. In order for me to INVEST in this phone it would need to check every box and it does not do that (comes close though).
Dropping $750 on a phone? What is the best investment even for a current WP user? iPhone 6S Plus? Note 5? 950 XL? The way I see it two phones have every app you could ever want, look great, and are GUARANTEED to be supported.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
I'll definitely be buying it.
-
Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
They look chunky, yes, but they also look quite thin. Looking at a 640XL doesn't make it appear all that special, but the sharp back edges do still give it a nice feel and look. If they combine that quality with a thinner design (thin is in, right?), I think I may grow to really like the 950 lineup. Will I get it on day one? That remains to be seen if I can get it with COLOR. I have grown quite fond of my green 930. The only thing I wish I had on it is LTE.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
Specs look good. I'm happy to see integrated wireless charging in both phones, not just the xl. Design is disappointing. Not that it matters, but they will be destroyed in the press reviews for being plastic.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
I was hoping all these leaks to be false.
I love Windows mobile. Smooth, personal, stable, compatible. But that is just software.
A flagship phone must be combination of design, specification and functionality.
1. Design - uninspiring and flat. I do not care how durable is polycarbonat or let say it right - plastic. A flagship must have look and feel... Like 930 has...untill i realised that glance is missing. The devices on the leaks do not have the magic of 930. They look like combination of 640 front and 830 back. With hump that is awful looking, even with chrome ring will be worst. And with this protruding camera module they did not succeeded to implement xenon flash? Fail.
I do not want my phone to be 6.something mm thin, but if it is 8 or even 9mm i want to be flat, without hump.
2. Specification - some maybe good. 3GB RAM, 32GB ROM, SD slot. Despite that SD 808 and SD 810 have issues, windows was never suffer from hardware problems like Android. Rumored iris scanner for me is useless instead of fingerprint one in place of home button. Why? Imagine that you are on meeting and want quick to unlock your phone that laying on the table or is in your jacket. Most quick and convenient was is to press home button and fingerprint scanner to unlock the device. You CAN'T put it to scan you iris. At least you must place the phone in front of your face. So, it is not quick and comfortable IMO. But lets say specs are 50-50.
3. Functionality - i think this is best of all. Totally support windows mobile and hope to grow.
So, was little long opinion but my conclusion: bad design, 50-50 specs and thumbs up for functionality. Total: 50:50. That is bad result for a flagship that must be sells driver for upcomming Windows phone 10.
IMO.

See and this is all about taste because the n8 just makes me shudder. And HTC m8 could be better but HTC loves to waste bezel just to show the HTC logo. To me small bezel is important. I like large screens but I don't want the phone to grow with the screen. So as far as design is concerned the phones with the least bezel are better designed. Whether they look better is another story. The new Moto does look good in the right configuration. They let you customize colours and all that. LG makes good use of bezel too but their design hasn't really changed much and they are not really taking risks. The Samsung looks really nice but the wrapping screen morphs.
When I was in the Apple store the other day looking at the Rose Gold iphone. Even the button is outlined around in rose gold. The attention to detail is really great. This is designed by an artist and engineers. Now Microsoft's phone doesn't look bad in the new slides, but you can tell it was designed by engineers. The way things are placed, it's all there for functionality.
Now iphone 6 has too much bezel for my liking. If they got rid of the bezel they would have the perfect phone Even the side bezel seems excessive. So right now there really isn't a perfect phone out there that I would say is the ultimate design. Apple just looks the best. Others have better use of bezel. So I will see how this new one looks. Usually the screen is what will catch your eye.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
OH WOW, reading these posts has me rolling on the floor, everyone complained for over a year about no new Windows flagship phones for the Windows faithful as they passed up the best one to date ( HTC M8 ) because it was not a Lumia, and now finally Microsoft has some great new ones coming and here you are picking them apart. Is it the Windows OS you like or is it what it comes in? Reading these post has me believing it is more about looks than it is about the hardware, specs and software. Are they one of the best looking phones? NO, but 90% of you are going to put a case of your choice on them anyway. Two screen choices, wireless charging, expandable memory, good camera, Windows 10 and you are going to stomp your feet because it comes with hubcaps and not chrome rims. If that is all you really think about you would be better off going to Android or Apple if you are after all the fluff they have plenty.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
Maybe the reason was that we waited for so long, we were left with the hope of some distant flagships coming our way while everything MS was introducing to the market was cheap stuff. So much time passed that the expectations for those flagships went through the roof, especially since friends in competing platforms had several flagship iterations while we sat on 2-3 year old flagships. Now the flagships are out, and they look like expensive versions of the cheap phones that preceded them. How's that for a downer? I miss the old Nokia times, when I just got 920 and the future was showing us the 1020 and the 1520. Those were the good times!

Well, I am bummed out I did break my 1520, the 950xl has all I wanted from the 1520... Looks better too. I mean man, we have had in many peoples opinions, some great looking lumias... What did they do for sell?! Nothing. Each one of those offerings were crippled in some way... Blame Nokia.
Microsoft is finally getting all "we" want in one bag. The 950 is a great start. Kinda reminds me of the 900 to 920 release... Here is a quick nice phone (900), but we are gearing up to release the best very soon... (920). Less than a year and such a solid effort.
All the 1520 was... Is big. Flat screen, buggy, crippled depending on the carrier, and did not help sells... Lower end models sold better than it.
We all have opinion ans choice, which they all should be exercised... I just don't see much special about bashing the new phones when they are designed with function, purpose, and component wise, executed all top points. The phone ia unique ans will stand out, which I like ans want it to.... That is the lumia way.
Outside of this design, what do "you all" want? App fap, what's other phones doing that I cant now?! I have not personally found a gotta have feature on any of them... So I stay where I have bee happiest over these years... Windows... And I almost bought an iPhone on Friday... But I am holding out for Oct. 6 for a really grip of information before I go crazy on some leaks and internet opinion.

Quite many seem to think you must use it like a wall mounted retina scanner in the spy movies: upright, straight, a few inches from your face. It doesn't matter if the phone is in front of your face or on the table, it just needs to be turned so the cameras get a picture of your eye.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
I had hoped that the back cover would not extend around the sides. Reminds me of my daughter's old 630.
What I hope they do is have a ton of colours available from day one. I need official, properly fitting back covers.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
I have used all of the premium phones, except the M8. I plan to start using one of those next week, to see what that's like. I think I'll hang onto an 830 (rm-985) or a 1520 just in case.
Off them all so far, I think the 930 wins in terms of function and looks.
I do like the look, and have a feeling they'll look better in person. The specs are great. I am afraid the cost will be too high to gain much acceptance though.
If it costs too much, I'll hang onto one of the others until the price comes down. No way I'm going back to apple, and I'm not real thrilled Android either.

Of course it's about looks. That's why I bought the Lumia 830 because it looked good. I wouldn't have bought it otherwise.
I actually didn't mind too much the specs were not that great because windows runs well on it. I don't really play games etc.. But it would be nice to have both. And yes this new one looks pretty good from what we've seen but have to see it in person.
Phones are about looks man. Realize this is a part of you, an extension. It's always with you. A CEO isn't going to go to some business meeting with important clients and bust out some ugly toys r' us phone. They are likely using an iphone.
When people buy cars they buy them for looks. Unless they can't afford to be picky. But if you are shelling out big money, it means you can afford to be picky.
And for me I'm just waiting because my Lumia 830 is good enough. I'll see reviews and what it looks like in person. I want to see what Microsoft does with the update process. If it becomes a carrier/oem driven update process then i'm out. This is really important to me, and probably many users. Apple is my only choice if Microsoft doesn't take control of the update process.

IMO.
Yah but iris scan is about security and these phones will be used by enterprises too. And you shouldn't be using your phone during meetings. And you can always bend your head down like you're looking at something and pop it up hehe.
But to be fair the 810 is v2.1. This has been proven to fix all the issues of the original 810. Read the reviews.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
Design is not inspiring neither convenient. And after 6 months of release when all the talks of the continuum, the latest OS features and the camera subsides, this phone and its hump is just gonna stare at you.
-
Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
It looks good after a while.
Now.. I just hope they better came out with something extraordinary with the camera. Haven't heard anything about the technology that these phones will use.
920 introduced OIS. 950?

For me fingerprint is secure enough and most important - more convinient to use. Also during meeting you can use your device to check something without disturbing others etc.
Will not comment how i must bend my head :-)

Actually fingerprint is super easy to get around. You only need some tape. It's been shown how it can be bypassed with a little effort. An enterprise would prefer something more secure if they have sensitive info on it. If someone wants to bypass fingerprint they can do it with some effort. And before the meeting you can just change your settings not to lock or a larger lock timer. Mines at 15 minutes because I don't like entering my pin constantly. Some have it every time they unlock phone.

I dont think we're gonna have to place our phone and our head in linear, aligned postition, this not a mission impossible movie, lol.

Can you link to a few of those reviews? From my reading, 2.1 is not fixed. Indeed, the name is misleading, as it was only the .1 that is the difference. The one that had the initial issues was 2.0.
Fixed it certainly is not, well according to the press I have seen.

3300 mAh removable battery!
MicroSDXC card storage support!
I'm sold......I'm even happy about the Snapdragon v2.1
...? So little confused is the display AMOLED? And does it use Gorilla Glass 4?
I also heard OLED with Gorilla Glass 3
Does anyone know witch one their using?
Gorilla Glass 4 is superior to 3!

The green one looks the best to me but unfortunately seems it's not coming so I would settle for the blue polycarbonate one! But again does the color really matter when you have a case? Only a clear case would benefit from a colored phone?

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
a little. but still no wow factor like how we used to when lumia 920 appeared, or 925, or 930. the design looks like lumia 940 with a little inspiration from lumia 1520. i'm not even sure about the placement of buttons on 950xl. the only benefit i see there is we can take snapshots and restart the phone easily using our thumb. i feel like it's like that so that we can easily take a snapshop of a bug and report, and easily restart the phone when it crashes or hangs hehehehe seems we will do that more often in the future -_-
the phone looks good in white, not black, because the silver ring on the camera is not too emphasized. and i think i will like the logo. it's like it's embossed downward and filled with glass so it think it will look good.
but given the current mess of the windows mobile 10. there's no wow factor overall -_- just promises of a good experience such as continuum, quasi-android support, a potential surface phone, that still haven't seen the light of dawn until now. hehehe i'm not sure if i'm going to switch brand for now, or wait in vain.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
No. I've been looking for an upgrade to my Lumia 925, and I've settled on one of these being the choice I go with. The only thing I'm worried about it price. I want the 950XL, just not the price tag that I fear it'll have.

Show me proof that TouchID on the iPhone can be bypassed with "very little effort." That is absolutely not true.

I agree to a severe degree +Like +Thank.
All-glass or glass-dominant bodies are overrated IMO. The Lumia series is smarter for staying on Polycarbonate as far as ergonomics and longevity are taken into consideration.

It's not that cut and dry. It depends on the fingerprint sensor. I don't know whether MS will require such security features on WM to meet certain standards, or if OEMs are free to use the same trash sensors most consumer devices ship with, but that's what it will depend on. An example:
http://www.nature.com/news/ultrasoun...curity-1.17904
If iris scanning just uses a standard front facing camera, than that will also be very easy to fool.

Whether this qualifies probably depends on your definition of "very little effort". I think it does, as it's much easier to bypass than a PIN. TouchID was bypassed by CCC mere days after the 5S launched, and they provided a DIY guide anyone can follow:
http://www.ccc.de/en/updates/2013/cc...-apple-touchid
If you have access to a clean glass surface a person recently touched, you can bypass that person's touchID.
This would not work using the type of sensor I mentioned in my post above.

"very little effort". As in for someone who knows how to do it and does it on a regular basis. As I said if you want to get into enterprise info compared to what else you can do this is much less effort.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
I like the clean design and lack of metal; I'll take polycarbonate over aluminum any day. However, I will be disappointed if this phone only comes in black and white. I don't mind the blue I've seen elsewhere, but this phone really needs to come in more colors. Unfortunately, given the close-mindedness of consumers I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft is scared out of trying more vibrant colors.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
To answer the question of the post, NO, my opinion did not change after seeing the 950xl press release. I love that phone. My opionion did change on the 950, they ditched the stupid camera lens trim ring in the preview photos to something more like the xl's trim.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
A design more towards Samsung's design aesthetic would catch the eye of a large group of consumers who shop by "looks". Having said that, I am interested in the 950 XL but would like to see the 2 offerings pictured next to a 920 and 1520 to get a sense of size prior to purchasing. I am running Win 10 Mobile on my 920 and I am hoping that the icons receive a design makeover for launch, perhaps a more aero style.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
Maybe the camera matters very little to most of you, but it has always mattered to me. In fact, ANYTHING that can be topped by the competition matters to me. Microsoft completely let this die once they got Lumia from Nokia. Design-wise, Microsoft also collapsed under the complaints by all you who insisted on removable batteries and storage cards. This meant that what I have always felt was the Lumina line's BEST design choices were seen in the 900 and 1020 types. I love the solid feel and colorful options of polycarb and I hate metal or cheaper plastics. I have a 635 for testing and it feels like junk (and performs like junk, too). Any of the devices with removable backs look and feel like cheap toys. And the rest of the specs of the 950 & 950XL are nothing to write home about... they aren't any better than the competition. Finally, Windows 10 is horrible by any measure. Yes, yes, yes, yes, I understand it's only a tech preview right now, but the design choices are horrible compared to WP8.1 and nothing works well. I see "loading" and "resuming" at nearly every turn and Cortana, which I rely on extensively on my 1020, I can't even bear to USE on Win10Mobile. What, exactly, is there to look forward to?

I respect your opinions.
Speaking only for myself, I'm looking forward to hearing about continuum. I'm looking forward to seeing where they take PureView (it's an all-new sensor, so I'm hopeful for improvements). I'm looking forward to trying out Windows 10 (buggy or not, it's going to be a new experience to try out). I'm looking forward to seeing how (or if) Microsoft has managed to tame the SD810. I'm looking forward to a phablet that isn't quite so large as the L1520 (which was just a tad too big to be comfortable). I'm looking forward to the flexibility that comes with choosing something other than a unibody design--one that isn't glass or aluminum. I'm looking forward to MS taking this step (any step?) forward because the last 18 months has been (largely speaking) a wasteland of low-end offerings (the 640XL was excellent, however).
I don't think a lot of people will agree with me on all these things. But, if I'm being honest with myself, I'm actually looking forward to more things than even I thought.

I wanted to add that about the 950 and 950 XL design is that they're too much akin to some Android phones already existed in the market, worse is that many of them are from midrange to some rather localized Android brands.
Attachment 113164Attachment 113165Attachment 113166Attachment 113167Attachment 113168Attachment 113169
This is why I'm also disappointed with the new design as if they stopped trying to give uniqueness to Lumia brand and became just another phone in the market. Specs of these devices are respectable while Continuum and Iris Scanner is a features that something to talk about, it remains to be seen. I can see at least Continuum will be the primary thing to get these devices, but the problem is that its not a primary factor for consumers also. Smartphones are very personal devices, that's why design plays a big role here even we put cases on it.
Now we'll really see after these devices arrived on stores and how people and reviews will react to these. Will these devices makes Lumia popular, its remains to be seen but for me, no. Unless they push massive marketing, then regardless of what it looks or how useful the features, marketing will save these phones.

Re: Did your opinion about 950 and 950XL change after seeing the press slides?
Well that's the point. Those images shares pretty similar design theme which 950 and 950 XL also now follows. It doesn't have to be exactly similar down to every detail but they're now closely related. Even though we say in general phones looks similar, well of course that's the after effect of touchscreen smartphones these days that glass is dominant at the front. That doesn't mean there is no way to make unique looks, there is still countless of ways possible. Lumia of old for example isn't really close with these images above.
They're not that bad for me, but I think this is another factor where the issue comes from. I've seen and held some of those phones which is why I share them here since they share now to upcoming Lumia flagship.
So yeah, indeed the phone start to look the same including Lumia 950 and 950 XL with these phones. Here is the comparison:

I would liken those Android designs more like the 500 series before I'd call that a 950. Sure, they carry a flat front and rounded design, but there's more to it than that.
When I hold a 530 at the Microsoft Store, I think of it as a very round and fat phone. That's what the Android compared looks like to me: round and fat. The 950XL, for one, is looking to be crazy thin, which gives a premium effect to it, especially in the perception of current consumers. Also, the squared back edges give off a sharp styling and I liken that to Lumia models like the 930, 640XL, and 830. Finally, you have to factor in the camera modules. I absolutely loved the execution on the 830 because it gives an aggressive look and signals that the phone camera is more than just there to be there. Same idea with the 1020.
Yeah, the phones share a flat back. But it's also the composition of everything on that flat back that give off an impression of what's inside. Don't get me wrong, at first I was seriously mixed about the 950 designs, but as we see them more I'm starting to understand why some things are the way they are. I understand people may want sharper corners on this, but I envision it in my head and see this looking like a big 435. This is all opinion, of course.

Totally disagree with you.
I've current 930, 1020 as backup also 808 and lot more Nokia before, like N8 etc.
N8 was genuinely designed phone. Adonised aluminum with unthinkable for that time 12MP module with 3x lossless zoom. Extremely durable from personal experience. Then came the photo monster 808. No words for the camera, but Symbian was dead anyway. Still have it when i get out with the family.
Then came 1020. Camera ok, not like 808 but better sound recording on video. But this hump!!! If you ever use 1020 you'll know what pain in the a$$ is this protruding module. You can put it on the table to look video in landscape, because of the hump is stsying unnaturally tilted. In the hands is the same. Looks awful as a design. Yes. Extremely durable, like my N8 before that.
Then came the beauty 930. Gorgeous design. Even my friends and colleagues with iPhone 5 on that time looked envy on my 930. But was without glance screen. And extremly slow shooting photos! Lets admit that. Maybe one of the slowest shooting phone on the market.
Since then i'm waiting for the next flagship. A lot of time pass. And...
Microsoft came up with this abomination. A front of 640 and the back of 830 in one shape. Ugly and predictable.
To those that speak against metal body - if you had N8 before, you'll know how durable and comfotable aluminum body can be. The polycarbonated body, showed on the leaked pictures does nothing in common with durability of 1020. It is much cheaper look and i'm convinced feel too. For what i need replaceble battery? I had it on my 808 but nevrr used it. Yes, micro sd is needed, but there are a lot of variants with metal or thicker polycarbonate body. This is cheap look. There is no wow, no sexy, no interest.
When I'm buying a phone, there must be few things: very good camera, excellent design and functionality. Windows 8.1 was very functional for me, but windows 10 preview is lagging and very unstable till now. How they will fix it till end of October, when must launch official windows 10 devices? Hope to succeed, but definitely will NOT buy such brick looking lowend device.
Look at Huawei P8. Looks gorgeous in black with 64GB and sd card, that's a presence. So pity that is android...

Same, I thought they looked ok in the initial renders and think they look slightly better in the press slides. would like to see them and hold them to make my final judgement though.
