Microsoft may never even release a consumer edition. They are encouraging third parties to build their own devices on the windows holographic platform. Asus is already working on their own headset and HTC is in talks with MS about developing their own. If MS does decide to release a consumer model, it will be a while. The biggest thing they need to conquer is the FOV issue. You can build great holographic apps on the dev kit that will be able to run on anything that supports the windows holographic platform, but it is like looking at them through a window right now.
