Downloaded the preview build but I got an error message stating it cannot install on a virtual drive. Anyone find/know a work around?

This is for the new build that came out today, not the original iso.

Yeah have the same issue. Installed windows 10 on a VHD and that went well. But now, installing this update gives the error about the virtual drive. Doesn't make sense.

It seems it is a drawback (or bug?) with using virtual hard drives. I found persons had the same issue upgrading from Windows 8.0 to 8.1 using VHD's.

Might have to wait till they update the ISO so we can do a reinstall.
Or they give us an ISO with just these updates.

I was able to upgrade to the new build using a generation 2 VM with Hyper-V.

Is there a new ISO with the updates that were released yesterday already included?

No, there isn't. If you're having problems then you need to reinstall the 9841 build and then install the 9860 build afterwards. This is the reason why installing a preview in a virtual machine is the best way to go.

I am just curious how this method would help if we are getting the error that you can't update on a VHD?

Are you running this as native boot?

It won't help as at the moment there is no updated iso. He's just implying that if you ever have a problem needing to reinstall, you would have to start over from scratch. I am not sure why it will not allow updating that way on a VHD, but it was the same way for 8.1.

I bought my desktop parts from Fred Flintstone (My motherboard is an Abit FP-IN9 SLI) and I have never taken the plunge into 64 bit even though I could have because I always had something that wouldn't work. Windows 10 in its current form is stable enough to me to run as main OS. I normally would have just formatted and installed the beta, but needing Windows 8.1 to certify apps due to them not updating the tools yet. It worked out for me that VHD was the best way to go being as I'm running on 32bit. So I am in the middle of updating 8.1 64 bit, and prepping to install windows 10 as a virtual machine.

I was unable to run Hyper-V because my processor doesn't have SLAT, but I was able to install Windows 10 in Virtualbox.

I was also able to update to 9860 in Virtualbox then boot from the VHD as I was before, bypassing that error message.

Was having the same trouble using Hyper-V with a VHD. In Hyper-V, I had memory assigned as Dynamic, with 512MB as minimum (default assignment). Increased memory to 2GB static and update installed.
