When they're was an OS upgrade from Windows phone 8 to WP 8.1, WP 8.1 was called the cyan update, then denim followed. Now Windows 10 should also be named after some color starting with E by this logic(Emerald maybe). Why is it not named so?

The color naming scheme was for firmware updates. Currently W10 is just the OS and on alpha stage so its not even a real end user product yet. I am sure during the W10 for phones final release they will name the firmware suite along the lines of a color starting with E or they could all together avoid something like that like Android does.

Amber, Black, Cyan, Denim are the firmware names. (they are like the drivers for your hardware.)

Windows Phone 8, Windows Phone 8.1, Windows 10 are Operating system names.

Totally different.

Except for in the case of denim, it seems microsoft sort of packaged them together as the entire updates name... though its still just the OS name for non lumia devices... denim is a qwerky update

people, even Windows Central often refer to Windows Phone Lumia updates by their corresponding firmware.

Black, Cyan and Denim are firmware specific to the Lumia devices. Other Windows Phones by Samsung, HTC, etc don't get those.
