Future of the Dark Theme?

It seems some of the new apps, such as Cortana, are not respecting the far superior, IMHO, dark theme setting. Respecting system settings and themes usually come early on in the development process.

Has anyone heard if this will be abandoned going forward?

White backgrounds are just a bad 90s design holdover, from trying to simulate paper, that create eye strain.

I want dark themes everywhere... preferably even for mail & office apps. When I want to do a bit of quick editing at night & try to use Word on phone, it feels like I'm holding the freaking lightning bolt of Zeus sometimes, even with brightness at LOW.

People freak out when they first see that change to a dark theme. But if they give it time they'll never want to go back.

Having a dark theme is one of the big selling points for WP.

As we transition more to tablet style I think this is even becoming more important. The likelihood of using word, outlook or Cortana up and close in a dark room vs a bright office is increasing. Dark themes work just as well if not better in bright rooms too.

Visual Studio has a dark theme so office products should have the ability too.

Hopefully they switch back to black for Cortana etc or at least give users the option (like they did with WP8 mail). Cortana on WP10 looks like **** and is kind of jarring when launched.

Microsoft should retain the dark theme. As its one of the only few things left that is unique with Windowsphone. They could change the dark theme to grey if people think the black is a funeral.

MS is just adding a dark theme to windows 10 for desktop so why should they remove the dark theme from W10 for phones?
Remember guys... This is still a preview version of WP 10... Is not even a beta. When WP 10 reach beta quality... Then we will see if they will keep it or if will be completely different OS.

I find grey to actually be the depressing one with black being elegant looking. The default dark theme for Visual Studio was grey so I modified the theme to a primarily black one. It significantly reduced eye strain and fatigue. I've been doing that long before WP 8.0.

But the option for people to have many themes or customizable themes would be appreciated.

I think the post from raphok summed it up, lol.

Just a concern I have as when you start developing a UI one of the first things you do is set the color up, which would be a system color choice in this case. So someone made a decision when designing to override the system setting and slap down #FFFFFF on the property. Which doesn't show much concern for those renegades among us who pick the theme with less eye strain.

A dark theme wouldn't work well in a design language that celebrates color.

Another dark theme fan--pretty please! So much easier on the eyes at night. I work until after midnight and I like to read a bit before going to bed so a significant portion of my day is spent in dark spaces and eye strain is a serious issue for me. In general, the new themes look harder on the eyes and harder to read, but for now I will chalk it up to being a work in progress. The smaller hairline fonts are very hard on the eyes--hasn't someone consulted with accessibility specialists?

I like the white theme better, and I think it looks better. But I would agree that most apps should follow the color profile.
BUT LULZ NO! We need to implement hamburgers everywhere first.

They were mostly too big in 8.x and now they are too small. We need a nice in-between.
