What's the best/cleanest/bug-free way to update to 10166? From start to end.
I have a Lumia 635 on previous build 10149.
I have apps on both my SD and internal.
Do I make a back up of my phone first or not? -> Then update from 10149 to 10166 -> Then 'About' Reset it -> Then do OR don't 'Restore From Backup'? -> Then transfer/re-download apps?

OR

Go back to 8.1 with recovery tool and then update to 10166?
And then, do OR don't 'Restore From Backup'?

*What method is best to update to a new build, and how? Also what are some bugs during the update process and what might I lose?*

My preferred way is to upgrade from 8.1, then hard reset it and do not use a backup. I also remove the SD card before upgrade to make the MS f*ck up vector smaller. People were reporting problems migrating from the previous build yesterday, don't know if it was because of that or something else. But since you are already at TP 10 and will be resetting the phone anyway, you may as well try it without the rollback first.

Get the 'Windows Insider' app. Choose 'Fast' if you want to get build 10166. Choose 'slow' if you want to get build 10149. I'd go fast because 10166 is apparently much more stable from what I hear, and coming from having 10149 on my 635, I would actually like a stable build now.

Yes, fast ring is a wiser choice. 10149 is dire compared to 10166. I think 10166 will appear in slow ring, too. It's pretty mature from what I have seen so far.

1. Go to Store
2. Search for "Windows Insider"
3. Open Windows Insider
4. Select "Get Preview Builds"
5. Select Fast Ring (more stable)
6. Accept terms
7. Go to "Settings"
8. Go to "Phone updates"
9. Wait for your phone to update. It'll bring you up to date on 8.1 first.
10. Go back to Windows Insider
11. Go through the same steps
12. Now it'll install the Insider Preview

It now goes directly to the TP. It reboots the phone after installing the WI app on 8.1 and when it comes back the phone finds the update to TP.

If I say screw the hassle, yet potentially better option of going back to 8.1 and then updating, how will I know if its an OS bug in 10166 or bug due to unclean/full update then?

If you hard reset and do not restore any backup you get an OS without any migration of settings performed whether you start with 8.1 or 10. They will have to get it right eventually, but at the moment a 100% correct migration of settings isn't a priority for them. Especially between OS versions that won't exist at the end.

So best would be:
1) delete Insider app
2) download Windows Phone Recovery Tool
3) Go to 8.1
4) Remove SD card
5) Re-download Insider app (sign in, select Fast Ring)
6) Go to Settings, Update.
7) It updates to newest 8.1
*AUTOMATIC REBOOT*
8) Go to Settings, Update. It upgrades to 10 (10166).
*AUTOMATIC REBOOT*
9) Hard reset (do NOT restore from backup)

- ALSO, SHOULD I MOVE ALL MY APPS TO SD OR OFF OF SD BEFORE ALL THIS?
- AT WHAT POINT CAN I RE-INSERT SD CARD?

*Be sure to have a well-charged battery and patience*

Am I missing anything?

Insert SD after the hard reset of the preview. Best copy any data from it you want to keep and format it after inserting to get rid of any remnants of the installed apps. Or use another one, or none at all. I do not know if you want to go back to 8.1and have it like before the preview. But by now I can reinstall it from scratch in my sleep, so I am only worried about losing data.

Any suggestions?

This happened to me after restoring a wrong backup, but not for W10, it was when going back to 8.1. Are you restoring a backup? If yes then don't. Also make sure you let it cool down before resetting. You can also help it by sticking the phone in a fridge when the cogs start turning :)
