Help with a 10 Insider Preview update

From having been on the preview a while back, I stopped all updates when the phone asked me to update to 10.0.12534.56. I uninstalled the Insider Preview app and just kept running my phone on 8.1. But now I'd like to go to 10586. What do I do to bypass this version? And why is 10586 a smaller number than 12534?

Thanks for any understanding here. :)

10.0.12534.56 is actually build 10052, which is smaller than build 10586. As to why the version number is numbered that way, only Microsoft knows.

You can go to build 10586 directly from Windows Phone 8.1 (even without performing a hard reset, although for technical preview builds performing a hard reset is usually preferred). I just did this with my sister's Lumia 535. However, make sure that you have a lot of time to spare. Depending on your device, this make take a lot of hours. My sister's Lumia 535 took around five hours, and for my Lumia 1020 it took around two hours.

All you have to do is Install the Windows Insider app again, tap on Get Preview Builds, select either Fast or Slow Ring (both have 10586 now), and once the configuration is done, simply check for updates in your phone settings.

Well, that's what I had done and it simply won't let me bypass 12534.56 in any way. It keeps telling me that I MUST install that version before getting anything else from the Insider Preview.

Hmm, have you tried clearing the temporary files from your phone using Storage Sense? Once that's done, perform a soft reset on your phone (power + volume down button until your phone reboots), then check for updates again.

Thanks for the suggestion. Bizzarely I have no temporary files. But it insists every time I try to connect to the Fast or Slow ring that it can't proceed with downloading anything further until I install the 12534.56 that is waiting to be installed.
