    Yes we need splash screen only for heavy apps.but in wp8.1 we have splash screen for calendar,video,music etc which are system apps and not that resource heavy.

    And now I just read in another website comment that edge(default browser) also has splash screen which relates to awful user experience.

    If an app needs to request data from the network or needs to retrieve large amounts of data from disk, these activities should be completed outside of activation. An app can use its own custom loading UI or an extended splash screen while it waits for these long running operations to finish.

    This is something I noticed as well.
    Splash screens appear when you initially open the app. I noticed though that it is minimized or eliminated if you open an app that was suspended.
