Why do i need an office 365 account to edit files in the office preview apps in my Lumia?

Hello! I have installed the office preview apps on my Lumia 520 running build 10512 but whenever I try to open any file it says that a office 365 account is needed to edit and save files! As far as I know only devices with 10.1 inch larger screens need the account to edit and save files. So is this a bug or is MS acting like an ***** and asking us to pay for using office apps unlike in wp8.1? Help will be appreciated!

It's a bug. Try re-installing the apps. That appears to fix the issue from what I understand.

I've got this same issue. When I try to save the file on my device it shows a error message then the app crashes to start screen. Also I'm unable to print using office apps, since I can print from Maps and OneNote.

Re-installing doesn't solve the issue.

As per my observation, larger files or files downloaded from internet can not be edited,

Copied files to phone via cable, you can edit them

My Outlook mail is also broken, does not sync gmail even when I try manually
