Let's face it. Windows will never catch up because Microsoft doesn't really care.
Truth is, they do care, no matter how much they say they don't (their quote of "Windows Phone is dead" from Microsoft").
If they just totally gave up, there would be no 950/950XL, There would be NO Universal apps (main thing, for apps to work cross platform, Windows,
WP and Xbox). Why keep Nokia around, I am sure Google would pay big $$ for that ? And why would they even build W10m with support for Android and iOS apps? Some of us has played with it, and besides some bad apps or not supporting hardware, it worked impressively well (a few missing apps I was able to install Android versions and THEY WORKED and worked WELL).
So Microsoft gave up the old thing they did, DUMP tons of money at some big name devs to create apps, this just got apps in but, poorly supported with no updates. Instead, they are taking a new road.
Pushing Windows 10 (PC) for FREE to people, so millions of people will grab on and more and more by the day. Trust me on this, spending years in R&D and making Windows 10 and giving it away for free for 40-50% of their customers does not make them any money (the point of being in business).
Then they give the devs EASY tools to work with and by a few lines of code, make it a UNIVERSAL app working on Windows 10 and Windows 10 phone. A lot of Microsoft tools are used now to make Android or iOS apps, so with a simple converter, with a few changes in code (I am sure it's not that super easy), they can have an app that will work cross platform. And they also provide the tools to take current android code or iOS code and convert it to a WP app, it makes it even easier for devs. This gives the devs the big thing, little support (update the Android version and it updates the WP version), and low cost to create an app, the biggest hold backs from devs.
Again, if your say Microsoft does not care, your CLUELESS. If ANYTHING they are putting more effort in Windows 10 mobile than they ever did on Windows phone 7 or 8. It's easy to DUMP money at the problem (if you have it of course) but, making it easier to built the library has taken them years to work out.
There is hope here, it just depends on how well it works and it's not something that will happen overnight. Do I think WP will ever be #2, No but, I do think there is a good place for #3 and if the share grows enough, all out problems will go away (mainly apps, otherwise WP is great)
