So I had the 1020 and it died after End of Life. Microsoft decided to give me the HTC One m8. It takes horrible pictures so I am done with it. I am thinking for picking of the 950 or 950 xl to tide me over and was wondering what you guys think? If I did the 950 I would get the AT&T version and finance for 12 months so I can upgrade earlier. I have done the comparisons and can't really decide.

I searched and didn't see a thread like this. If you want me to delete I will do my best.

950 vs 950XL *mostly* comes down to the screen size you want. Speaking as someone who is also moving from a 1020... The cameras are exactly the same. The XL has a bit better processor, larger battery, and looks a bit nicer IMO. The larger battery is somewhat offset by having to power the larger screen, and due to the better processor it should be able to handle imaging processing(not image capturing) SLIGHTLY faster and it's a bit larger screen size but those are the only real differences.

So, ultimately the decision comes down to screen size, esthetics, and cost.

Personally, I'll be getting the 950 because the XL is too big for me.

I would NOT say the cameras are exactly the same. The Lumia 1020 has double the megapixels after all. Other than the resolution of the camera, the 950 is better in every other way and in even some ways the camera on the 950 is better. The 950 camera support HDR I believe and it can also take videos at 4K and at a higher frame rate than the 1020.

For me personally, the picture resolution is the most important part of the camera which is why I'm keeping my 1020 and not getting the 950. I can't tell you how many times I've looked at old family pictures, saw something in the picture, zoomed into it and got a screen full of pixels. 20MP is still pretty good but I like to get the highest resolution I can get and currently there is no smartphone in existence (other than Nokia 808) that even comes close to 41MP.

I played a bit with the 950 at an ATT store. I currently have an Icon through Verizon and I can say that the 950 was much lighter even with all the security gizmos they have on it to prevent it from walking away.

My biggest thing is I was not happy with the 1520's camera. I had it for about 3 weeks after my 1020 died. If this is the same sensor it worries me.

It is basically the same with more software features. It's kind of funny, Microsoft basically took the previous camera design that Nokia created, put it on their Microsoft branded phone and said it is the best camera they have made.

Have any of you compared the 1020 pictures versus the 950? I tried in the store and the 950 images seemed better. I think the sensor in the 950 may be bigger than the 1020. My Nikon D600 is 24 megapixel, but it gets better images than my 41 megapixel 1020...

If money isn't the problem, go get the 950XL. You won't be disappointed. However it you can't just buy a $600 phone, you should think about it. Nobody knows what you can / can't afford better than you.
