Now that we know for sure that the Lumia 520 isn't going to get the update to w10m, what do u guys suggest I should do? Become an Insider , get .164 and use it forever OR stick with wp8.1? what runs better on the 520? And those of u who have used /are using .164 on 520, how's the experience, what are the problems and what works fine? Please suggest me as I still have at least 6 months before I buy my next phone. Thanks!

Become an Insider , get .164, and if you find performance is up to satisfaction, continue using it until you find it necessary to replace it.

If you are using it as a daily driver, I suggest you stick with 8.1. My 520 is on .164 and it freezes often. The lock screen performance is also bad. Takes at least 3-4 seconds to bring up the number pad. If you can live with these issues, you can take that route

I'm running . 164 on the Lumia 521 (same hardware as the 520). I only have the occasional app crash, and it's not quite as 'snappy' as Denim 8.1 but I haven't had any major issues with the build. I'd say if you want to ensure you have absolute stability, then of course stay with 8.1

But with the Windows 10 Mobile (insider) build, you'd get the options to run 8.1 AND Win10 apps. Also, there still 'may' be at least a couple more insider builds coming for that 10586. xxx TH2 branch (before Redstone takes over).

As for me, . 164 is just fine to run daily.. ultimately you can decide from the different feedback given.

If I were the OP I would base it off this...stability vs feature parity. I'm not saying WM10 is not stable for the 520 but 8.1 has proven to be stable. On the flip side, apps will start using WM10 APIs and add more features. Some are already better (outlook mail app) and some are built for or only available for WM10 (Saavn, upcoming BoA app, etc.). I would've chosen to stick with WM10 using insider as long as possible and then move on (to another device or platform) later.

Could you be more specific regarding which apps/features work fairly well and which ones cause more problems?

I mainly use it for calling, WhatsApp and some internet browsing ? Does it cause a lot of problems on that front or does it work fine?

I've tried every build of Windows 10 Mobile on my 520, but wasn't able to use any for more than a day. The most annoying issue for me was the frequent screen freezing, which requires a soft reset to fix. Some apps like Facebook and Windows Central are slow to launch (and Facebook was so slow that I used Edge to browse it) And using Messenger/WhatsApp was almost impossible for me as typing becomes slower the more you type.

In terms of performance and reliability, Windows Phone 8 was the best for the 520. 8.1 was more functional but performance (mainly app switching for me) took a toll. 10 is even worse - almost unusable. So I'd say WP8.1 is the best option for us until we get new phones.

Yeah I agree with you. Wp8 was so good on 520. With 8.1 my phone got a little slow and nowadays I even notice some random crashes.

This is a far bigger list to explain and you'd better off installing it on your device and try it first hand. You can do some research to see how it performs before trying it out yourself.

I may understand your frustration but making personal comments on fellow members is not permitted. Besides the OP never mentioned where he/she is from (though from his name it seems he is from Indian origin) so folks are free to assume.

Really sad about the 520. Granted it was never a powerhouse device but now it's really being left behind.

I'm from India and here the 640 is about 135USD and the 640xl is about 225USD. But its not about affordability. I first want to check out w10m and then decide if its good enough for me or not. That's the reason why I wanted the update on my 520. And yeah its really sad that the best selling windows phone in its time is left out.

Here in the US, the AT&T locked 640 is selling for 30 bucks. The phone can be unlocked and flashed to an unbranded ROM to convert it to a factory unlocked phone, similar to what's sold in India.

Only in the US though, MS(or AT&T) is losing money on it lol. Btw, if you wanna check out Wp10, go to Croma and check on the 950/950XL :) . It may not be the updated build but the UI will be the same.

Do you mind sharing the guide to flash it to the unbranded rom to convert it to a factory unlocked phone?

The only guide I'm seeing is to change it to TMBOILE branding.

    Thanks.

Btw, I have another issue. My brother's Lumia 430 is unable to download the upgrade advisor app from the store. It shows "pending" for a couple of minutes and then fails. Don't know what's the issue. Could anyone of you help me with that?
