Still no Surround recording?

Hi There,

after a few months I still using my 950XL and really hoping for a surround 5.1 recording....as it was before with other lumia devices....

I have no clue if theres any sign of that implementation, or will be ever implemented at all??

Or is there a chance to downgrade to denim where the 5.1 was default?

I've merged this with your previous thread and moved it to W10M to be more general. Please bump older threads rather than creating a new one each time you with to open up discussion again.

Anyways, I have no idea whether Microsoft will get around to anything. I suspect the mobile division lacks resources and is doing its best to divvy it up among the most urgent things. No clue if it'll ever happen.

And you cannot downgrade the 950 XL to an OS it never shipped with.

The next possibility is with the, soon to be released, Firmware update; if it doesn't show then...there's no telling.

for people that manage to get the lumia camera 5 app on their icon-930-1520 running TH2 or RS1, 5.1 sound works just fine, as well as bass filter, so you better look in that direction, somehow get that lumia cam 5 app installed on your 950

other than that you can look into upgrading to a 8.1 phone to get 5.1 sound :p

Re: Still no Surround recording?

Hi There, thanks.... is there no new fast ring builds?

Last fast ring build was Monday, 18-Jul: OS: 14393

Also, new Firmware (01078.00053.16236.35005) is available is some regions; but unfortunately it is reported to NOT have 5.1 surround sound;(

What's the use-case for 5.1 recording, I'm just curious?
How do you connect all the microphones, or is having 5 mics concentrated in a 5-inch space really effective?

I'm not try to challenge the viability, I'm actually really interested in how this works, in "real world" use.

the phones have 4 HAAC mics positioned strategically, size doesnt matter in this end of the process, the use case is having incredible sound fidelity and positioning while playback if you have the 5.1 or even 4.0 speakers, also the bitrate was so high you can outperform pretty much any audio recording from this year latest phones, even a dedicated solution like a gopro camera sounds terrible in comparison

Interesting. I guess I figured you had to have the mics spread out, like a playback scenario for 5.1 (at least this makes the perception of "sound movement" relative to video better, IME).
I'm really curious now, I'm going to look around for a diagram and/or physics explanation, cool stuff.

Usually is a firmware / software emulation, like the 3D audio apps for desktop, which start by a ambience stereo or triple mic array, and using filters and algorythms .

Guess only iPhones and Galaxyes uses 4 mics till now
