Ok today I tried to update an excel spreadsheet that is stored on my phone. It was an excel file I created with my phone. Now excel is telling me I have to get office 365 to edit my document. WTF?

uninstall excel and then install it back - the request for office 365 will disappear

I'm in the same boat. I activated the Office 365 free trial from my 950xl. It said the apps are preinstalled.

What is the difference between the preinstalled apps and the Office 365 apps, if any?

I have the full Office 2016 suite on all my other computers from my job, so what is the advantage of Office 365 for me?

Thanks for any insight. I am so confused...

Office 2016 Suite is a bought software for using on 1 or more desktops. Office 365 is a over the world service with a montly fee for using Office in every device you got: pc, notebook, tablet, phone (droid and iStuff too), Smart Tv, even directly on a simple web page.

And everywhere you'll be, you'll find your docs ready for working / editing

But does the Excel from Office 365 have any functionality not included in the Excel preinstalled on my 950xl? Say editing spreadsheets or working with continuum, for example.

If not, since I get Office 2016 suite basically for free through work ($10 for my personal computer on the home use program) is there any advantage to pay $70 per year for Office 365 after my free trial is up?

I suppose I have a year to figure it out, but I'm afraid I'm not a patient man. I know I'd probably live longer if I were, but old dog/new tricks and all...

In terms of apps, there is no difference. They are the same app. It's free to use on a device below a certain size(I forget the size). Above the size you need O365 to get full function.

In terms of Office Suite vs O365 the only real difference is it's product vs a service. You bought Office 2016, will own it forever, and can use it on 1 computer.

With Office 365 Home you pay yearly(or monthly) to use whatever version is current on up to 5 computers which you can share with other people as well.(Plus other benefits like increased OneDrive space for each person assigned a license)

Office 365 Personal is the same, but only1 person/PC

all office apps on devices less than 10 inches will be free to use. So getting office 365 just so to use on mobile devices will not make sense.
However, I have heard that certain features for office mobile apps do need the 365 license to access them - but they are very few and probably things we normally don't use
