I read about this and while it makes sense, it's still a disappointment.

I'm still thinking that the next "phone" that i buy will run Windows. The same operating system as the next Surface that i buy.

I agree. I like Windows and that wont change. Even if MSFT goes in a different direction, I have no use for IOS or Droid.

Sad indeed but at the same time, not at all surprising.

MSFT can do what they please, and they will. And maybe they'll get it right or maybe they won't. Whatever happens from hereon it'll surely not include me, and I'm good with that.

AI, the intelligent cloud is what will empower us to be even more mobile.
We can't store the cloud or perform the AI locally, but we will have all sorts of devices to accessing it

Makes sense. They just developed that visual AI for blind people, they have an AI neural networking chipset in their next HoloLens, they talked about their visual, audio and other AI apis at build 2017, and they mentioned the intelligence cloud, and opened Cortana skills to beta/demo access.

They've been talking a long time about conversation as a platform too.

Not too surprising for me, and hardly a change of direction. I mean who ISN'T focusing on AI at the moment? Apple, google and MSFT are all buying AI start-ups.

As far as the language in the vision statement, they basically mean the same thing.

The new language is simply more precise. They were talking about cloud and locally driven software services in both instances, via the intelligent edge. They were never talking about "windows 10 mobile" in their visions statement, that would be silly to have in a vision statement, they were talking about mobile devices in general. In just makes a lot more sense to talk about the edge, than it does about the target devices, the fact that the edge is cloud connected (which is implied anyway).

    Non-news IMO.

Agree with @Drael646464 as non-news, we faithful few knew it was coming. But remember just because they removed language from somewhere doesn't mean it is not in play for example cloud was part of the statement removed, but two weeks ago MSFT profits surged on the cloud services. I remember as well many articles and statements that many MSFT officers discussing how mobile is changing. This all goes back to the Windows on 10, you put it on a tablet, computer, it only makes sense to ultra-mobile. Qualcomm is already sitting a 10nm die, dropping from 14 nm the previous iteration, and the 845 series already being disclosed, it could be even smaller or more efficient, possibly both. So to declare this as the end of mobile... not a surprise. Considering Cortana is now being integrated into IoT everywhere (Johnson Control GLAS anyone?) that just tells me that the ultra-portable is going to be focused on productivity with AI backbone. The Lenovo Folio... as a surface device. Not mobile, ultra portable, remember we heard that they are going to have a new device but not in a form factor seen before, just like the Surface.

It seems Surface Laptop sales have been horrible. Microsoft is done in the client side, they have to concentrate all their efforts in enterprise, cloud and infrastructure.

Mark as a contact wearing user... I would almost welcome the option. Google's attempt was about collecting data for advertising. Suspect Redmond will do it focused on productivity.

Half of MFSTs business is consumer based. They are after all, a software company.
