No pointer / trackpad doesn't work any more

Since the latest update to 10041 I no longer have a cursor, my track pad doesn't work. I'm able to log in use keyboard and then get little further. Will plugging in an external mouse help? I don't have one on hand so wanted to see if that would make a difference before buying one.
Any other fixes / workarounds?
