OneDrive in Windows 10 - Options For Those Who Liked Placeholders

I really don't want to do a 1:1 from my OneDrive to my local drives. I really liked the placeholder option but I know it won't be coming to Windows 10. So what are the other options to upload/download to and from OneDrive without 1:1 syncing? I know I can do so, clumsily, via the website. And I know Office apps will directly connect to OneDrive. I just don't want to have to sync it 100% on my devices, especially my 64GB Dell Venue 8 Pro.

Disable sync through settings area.

If I do that, then I cannot see what is on my OneDrive...only what I sync...and I can't simply use OneDrive in the cloud.
