Specifically will the change to Windows 10 save all registry entries and installed programs or wipe the registry clean like a fresh install of Windiows 8?

It will be an upgrade, leaving things as they were- best case scenario.

HOWEVER there's no guarantee a piece of furniture won't be moved around or a picture frame won't be askew. Make a backup.

If you install it as an upgrade, it will attempt to do an upgrade.
If you install it as a fresh install, it will do a fresh install.

It will be an upgrade, but AFTER you perform the Free Upgrade, you will be able to do a clean installation.
