I've noticed since this morning a series of attempts to install this new update (KB3081424) to my Surface 3 Pro but it has failed with error 0x80004005. The error message was very helpful...

There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information this may help:
-Cumulative Update for Windows 10 for x64-based systems (KB3081424_ Error 0x80004005

I must be blind but I can't find the link to directly download it from Microsoft.

OK, further reading on Microsoft's site leads me to believe this will only be available via Windows update. That is the comment on many of the security bulletins this fixes.

Looking at my logs it appears to be failing on download. So I'll wait as the package has not completed on my Surface.

Turned on my latop and read this thread...so I checked my notification thingy and nothing.

I then went to my settings and checked my update/security and it showed the update was already downloaded and said my computer needed to be restarted.

So I restarted and it rebooted right away with no problem.

"This update includes improvements to enhance the functionality of Windows 10"

So my workstation updated with no issues and restart was clean. Surface 3 same. But Surface Pro 3 is still getting download issues. I'm going to continue to let it sit over night and check it in the morning.

Hi, via automatic update I get error 0x80070564. From my manual attempt I just see 'Initialising'- no progress beyond that. (Win 10 was an upgrade from 8.1)

Softpedia offers this:

Maybe you need to perform a clean-install, sometimes older system files could cause corruption. Try deleting Win update cache using this link How to Delete a Windows Update Cache (5 Steps) | eHow
If above link fails, try this one:Tweaking.com - Windows Repair
Do perform a full backup incase if you want to perform re-install.

I deleted two entries of the kind .net 4.5 in the registry branch
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
then installed the manual update, shut down Windows, and after restart everything was done (after two days of vain attempts).

I must be blind but I can't find the link to directly download it from Microsoft.

I found a link to that update online but don't bother downloading it as the boot loop will continue. I tried all options including a registry key method shown on it but that fails too.

There is another KB which failed to install a week ago but that doesn't show up in the windows update anymore. It is KB3074683. I am not sure if that causes the next update to fail, although it says it is cumulative update so it shouldn't matter.

My laptop failed this update several times as well. The second time it tried to boot I heard the Win7 boot tone prior to the startup screen which never came up. I upgraded from Win7...not sure if this is a prob of something getting stuck with old files?
