ok, so this is sort of a pie in the sky, but I'm just going to go down this rabbit hole.
imagine that all your basic messaging happened from your band, and it didn't need a phone because it has a built in cellular radio. but then, if you hooked the band up to a dock, you had a desktop experience. I have absolutely no idea what would be needed to make this happen, but what if this is the successor to windows phone? the most obvious problem is that making an actual phone call through the band would require a bluetooth headset or similar, and taking photos would be non-existent(at least in it's current state). but why not?

Because fitting the necessary technology into a wrist-sized wearable with a decent battery life, internal storage, and performance would be impossible in today's world. The technology just isn't there right now. Look at the Band 2. For what it is, that's pretty great engineering, and in no way whatsoever is it meant to replace your phone.

Next year's band should come with W10 IoT which will open up the api for some more complex functions, but what you're describing won't be there for a few years yet.
