This app runs and runs, saying it is looking for items to backup. In WP8.1, it worked great. Is this broken in W10? If not this, how would I transfer all of my text messaged to a new W10 phone (like, say, the 950XL)?

    Thanks much

If you have enabled SMS backup on your device, you should find your texts on the new device.

    In theory.

But MS have an issue, I believe server side, since December, and they're totally quiet about it. Save/restore in unreliable. I know some texts are saved (I can see them on PC, in Messaging app) but they are NEVER restored. Even with a 640 on last insider, after hard reset, I don't get all my texts, like some received on the 1st of Jan are missing.

Now back to your question: I've tested contacts+backup, but while it succeeds in saving my texts (26000+), it fails to restore (crashes after 700-1000 messages are restored).

Thanks for your reply. I have had this work great on 8.1 (both the app and auto. Not having any luck with 10.

Try "Transfer my data". I had similar crashing issue with "contacts +message backup" with older Windows mobile builds. But since Nov15 it works fine.

On my devices, it says it can transfer only contacts.

For Insider or people already on W10 mobile, please copy/paste this feedback link and upvote so that MS fix this issue:
