Why did the update on Windows 10 delete or lose almost all my files?

As I was teaching a class today Windows 10 started an update that I did not approve. It just started. When it booted back up there was a dialogue box saying all my files were where I left them. When I click on the listing of the 20 most recent files in Word, I can open those. But the folders in which they were housed cannot be found. I need your help immediately.
