Microsoft Cheated Lumia Users

I'm still fuming with anger for not being upgraded to 10 (I own a 920) but I have made up my mind.
I would like to ask one thing: Can MS bring those new, updated apps on 10 to 8.1?
You know, those new Twitter, IG, FB, LINE apps are so much better than their counterpart in 8.1, they're the reason why I want to be officially upgraded to 10. Imagine having to go back to 8.1 and be forced to use outdated apps, I shiver with fear....

You know, it's not a direct comparison, but I used to work on the OS for the 2nd largest computer company (at that time). I can imagine the meeting if we told our bosses that the new version of the OS wouldn't work on 50% of the existing machines. We'd have been escorted out of the building.

You can stay as long as you want in Win10 10586. You'll get support till the last insider build. You will not get any build withn a greater number, only that.
And then, no one will ask you to remove it
Phones can stay on last 10586 and use win10 apps.

On my Lumia 1020, I changed to Fast Ring and did check for an update, got Configuration Update and the gears were spinning, now preparing the Phone, I wonder what update I received!

1020 has Slow and Release ring, not fast. You are simply downloading the updated config. Sorry

Microsoft EXPLICITLY SAID 36 months of updates. 1320 - my phone - came out February 2014, and therefore HAS TO BE UPDATED THROUGH 2017.
I don't get you people; you don't own Microsoft. You - most of you - are not shareholders. What is it with you always taking their side? Can it be anything beyond sheer fanboyism?

The system is very stable after update, returning and going to apps goes fast. So for ME, no performance issues, only Groove still has a blank icon

I've got an HTX 8x (shafted by HTC and broken by Microsoft) and a Lumia 1020. The 1020 is on build 10586.164 and it works great not sure why people were complaining. I've got better battery life on the 1020 now than I did before. Of all the older devices the 1020 has 2GB of ram so lots of room for Windows 10. This is an extremely frustrating move by Microsoft as it's now 3 devices I've owned that have been abandoned (also had a Samsung Focus - yes I know why Windows Phone 7 devices were abandoned but they were still abandoned).

I commend Microsoft for making the best business decision here. My 1020 was a tire fire of a phone when running any builds of 10. My 1520 even janks from time to time, but is far more acceptable.

Microsoft said they plan to update all phones, but after several builds handed out to the masses to test the OS on a large scale they learned, from our feedback, that those low end and older phones simply cannot handle the OS. So they made what I am sure was a tough call and will be better off as a result of it.

Sure it sucks, but look at Android - their phone update situation is a mess. With iOS, yes many models get the latest update, BUT, those older phones are stripped of many features that the newest hardware will have available due to their age.

That's mobile, deal with it.

Its your 1020 problem, not my 925.
So I want to be able to upgrade my phone OS.
This decision is almost as dumb as the move from WP7 to 8

Wrong. I am not a fan boy, just level headed and someone who runs their own business.

The quote in your post mentions support for three years. People are getting confused. Support DOES NOT mean the company is obliged to offer OS updates. The only support they are obliged to provide are security updates and patches. There has been a recent court case where Samsung were put in the dock to answer why phones of 12 - 18 months old weren't updated to latest OS. It turns out the only OS they have to support is the one it came with by providing security and patches / bug fixes. I have a couple of android phones. A Galaxy ace, as a spare, that came with 4.2.2. It's just a year old. Have I seen an OS update? No! Just patches. I also have a Galaxy tab, around 18 months old, that's stuck on Jelly Bean. Any OS update? Nope.

Support for older devices also means fewer new ones sold. How is a software company or an OEM supposed to recoup, or ofset costs for development. All of this can also be read along with the so called promise by MSFT. There was no promise. People once again see something shiny and go into Magpie mode without reading the caveat's quite clearly posted. Admittedly it isn't nice to be left out, but a device 3-4 years old is going to start lagging behind. As said in a couple of posts in this thread, the older devices are chewing through batteries. I guess they are having to work harder.

Mine is not lagging behind. It runs very well on Win10. Maybe it's an old system, but it's an old flagship with 2GB of RAM, but yes with an old processor.

The battery drain is not more than on 8.1, but the same, two days with little use, more than a day with medium use

There's something to be said for new tech. A couple of years ago I bought an 820 through AT&T. It was good. I installed 8.1 and it was better. But a couple of months ago, I decided I wanted to try 10. I didn't want to risk bricking my phone, so I bought a 632 GoPhone at Staples for $30. I installed 10 and it worked great--not pefectly (especially not Edge) but well enough that it became my daily user. I sold the 820 on eBay. The 635 does everything I need and it has WAY better battery life. I suspect that this reflects improving technology...

I'm afraid you'll have to live with those old, outdated apps when going back to 8.1. Or maybe they'll be gone altogether as the vendors removed them because they didn't want to have to support two apps (8.1 & 10) on such a tiny platform.

Honestly, I dont think that Microsoft will provide any means to run Win10 Mobile apps on WP. Why would they? What's in it for them doing so? Maybe a few more happy customers, but that's it. Why would they as a company that didn't have any problems at all at one time to abandon 100% of their users and at another time 50% of their users, why would they care to invest the money to get some of them back onboard. It would have been probably cheaper to invest in optimizing the OS, which they decided not to pursue any further... End of story.

Look at the date of that tweet 2014 that is before the feedback of th poor performance of the insiders builds kn S4 based hardware.

Wake up people S4 based phones are not up to running Windows 10 Mobile.

That is not Microsoft's fault the old phones are past there best and you need t ok move to new hardware to get the full benefit out of Windows 10 Mobile.

Same thing with the desktops I run a Core 2 Quad desktop that supported Virtualization under Windows 8.1 but now under 10 you need a Core I processor.

So I bought a Core i7 desktop to support virtualization in Windows 10.

I don't care if Microsoft does not put Windows 10 Mobiles on all Windows Phone 8.1 users but the Windows 10 Mobile is really unstable and unreliable.

Your using Windows 10 Mobile on the wrong hardware then or you have faulty hardware.

I am using it on a 1020 and a 950 and both phones have been reliable with 586.164

Stick the 586 insider build on your 920 and get over yourself. Technology changes and things move on. Being stuck in 2013 does not help.

Software requirements change and tech moves on. Deal with it.

I think that the problem was that most of the preview builds were absolutely horrible on any phone. It's only really in the last couple of months that Windows 10 Mobile became usable and the current build (10586.164) runs very well on my 1020 for instance. But many earlier builds certainly did not. So if they are using feedback from earlier builds to gauge final update availability, no wonder they are getting wrong data.
