Win 10 attempts to open folder get error no file associated-create an association

PC has been Win 10 for a long time, new problem just started a few days ago. Last night "new updates" were processed and problem still exists

Left click generates the error "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel"

Right click gives context menu with option to "open", using it open file explorer

Re: Win 10 attempts to open folder get error no file associated-create an association

How to set default programs in Windows 10 - CNET

What might of happened when you did the update the file association was removed. If you click on a file with the XLS extension sna you don't have excel on the machine or another spreadsheet you will get the same error or if you try to open a .PDF with adobe reader or a clone of reader.
