Using microsoft launcher and cortana as only assistant.

I received an update for cortana, stating it can now read sms and respond to them. But i cant seem to get this to work as the google assistant keeps trying to activate even though i set cortana as default assistant. Is there any way to make Cortana respond the phone button on my car steering wheel, and also a verbal "Hey Cortana?" .
As soon as i press the phone button the google assistant keeps wanting me to turn it on. I would really like this gone. any help much appreciated.
