How to delete characters from filenames

I have several thousand files of format [abc 123] [def 456], and want to delete the parentheses. Using powershell or cmd.exe does not recognise "Rename-Item" as a valid command. I checked the spelling, and even copied and pasted the command example from 2 different websites. Any ideas?
