Are these updates so important that they have to do it right now? I've 40 minutes to spend on the computer and now I'm waiting 20 minutes for the updates to finish.

Yes, I haven't used the computer in a couple weeks.

What's wrong with doing it when I turn the damn thing off? I'm using the computer (other computers, not this one) because I need that computer right now. Not in 20 minutes.

Go to Control Panel > Windows Updates > Change Settings and disable automatic updates.

Well the first reason is because you can't do the updates with the computer turned off. But like the th poster just said you can control when it's done when the PC is on.
