Choppy video playback?

I have a video I recorded from my HTC 8x that is 1080p mp4 that will not play on my laptop smooth. I have loaded codecs, checked drivers, even dual booted to vista. Is there some new codec I may be missing? Also other videos of like format are choppy. My wife's netbook and laptop play them fine.

Amd turion 64 2Ghz processor, alienware m9700, nvidia go 7900gs, 2gb ram. The norm for a $3500 paperweight bought at the beginning of 2007. Yes it's old, but vista ran hd mp4 and mkv files fine. Seems like codecs have been blocked in windows 8. It's like hardware acceleration is not being used on the video card. Vlc just seems messed up since the last update. The only player I ever used was wmp. I even tried recoding the video to avi format, still choppy. I just keep thinking I saw this way back in 2008 and it was a codec issue.

Thanks I think I found the problem. My sli setup was why I wasn't having issues before. One of my 2 video cards is d.o.a. Gotta get a new one. Thanks for the links. I will dig through and see what may help.

Ok I re-encoded the video and it plays. What? Same resolution. Except aac codec. I assume that is HD. Higher compression rate I guess.

Yeah I thought about sound, but its weird that the HTC 8x is recording video in a codec not available. But sound drivers are updated and video drivers.

Yeah I think the compression is to high on the HTC 8x for one video card to handle. I'm gonna test my second card in slot one and see if it boots ok. If not gotta buy a new used one. If they had the 64bit audio drivers I'd run 64bit os. I think that is the main issue now.
